CLERMONT, FL – The Cabrini softball team split two games on Tuesday in Clermont, FL, as the Blue and White suffered a 12-3 loss to Augustana College before scoring a 6-1 win over Hanover College in the nightcap.
The Cavaliers jumped to an early lead in the opener, as senior
Alexandria Ramos' single scored junior
Darian Caputo. The Vikings responded in the top of the third erupting for five runs on six hits.
Cabrini got a run back in the bottom of the frame, as senior
Chrissy Ferraro, who opened the inning with a lead-off walk, scored on a single by senior
Jess Giordano.
Augustana (4-2) extended its lead in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs on three hits, including a two-run homer, to take a comfortable 9-2 lead.
The Blue and White put three runners on base in the bottom half, but managed just one run. After keeping the Vikings off the board in the fifth, the Cavaliers loaded the bases in their half of the frame, but could not cut into its deficit.
Augustana added to its leas in the sixth, as it plated three runs on four hits, taking a commanding 12-3 lead. Cabrini could not answer in the bottom of the sixth, as the game came to an end.
Ramos accounted for three of the Cavaliers' hits in the loss and drove in a run. Giordano suffered the loss, surrendering 12 earned runs on 16 hits.
The Blue and White rallied in the nightcap, as freshman
Casey Scheuren delivered another solid pitching performance. The rookie allowed just one earned run and scattered five hits with five strikeouts in her second complete game victory in as many starts.
Hanover opened the scoring in the third inning, scoring its only run of the afternoon.
Cabrini struck back in the fifth inning, as Scheuren, who drew a leadoff walk, crossed the plate with Caputo on a Ramos RBI single.
The Blue and White put the game away in the sixth with four runs on five hits. Senior
Victoria Hall and sophomore
Alexandra Schell hit RBI triples, while Scheuren and Caputo drove in runs with RBI singles.
After allowing the Hanover run in the third, Scheuren shut the door on the Panthers. The rookie allowed just four Hanover base runners over the game's final four innings.
Ramos collected her second three hit game of the day, while Caputo and Scheuren added two base knocks each.
After taking Wednesday off, the Cavaliers will face this same Hanover (3-3) squad at 4:30pm on Thursday, before facing Houghton College (1-3) at 7pm.
