Radnor, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team picked up their 17th consecutive win this evening, this time over host Neumann University by a 69-60 final.
The Cavs received big performances from sophomore
Meghan Matthews, junior
Nomi Washington and freshman
Kate Lannon. Lannon tallied a team high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds, while Matthews picked up her third double-double of the year as she tied her career high with 14 rebounds and added 15 points. She narrowly missed a triple-double, in fact as she finished with a career high seven assists as well. Washington chipped in 17 points, marking her third consecutive contest in double figures.
Both teams got off to a slow start as the game's first field goal wasn't until 2:12 left in the first quarter, courtesy of a layup from Matthews to give the Cavs a narrow 5-4 lead. A late layup from Lannon sent the Cavs into the second quarter with a 9-8 lead.
The second stanza proved to be the difference for the Blue and White as they opened it with an 8-to-0 run to take a 17-8 lead. After both teams swapped baskets to make it 21-12, the Knights responded with a 6-to-2 run to cut their deficit to just five points. The Cavs answered with baskets from Washington, Lannon and Matthews to take a 29-20 lead heading into the half. All told, Cabrini held the Knights to just 3-of-12 from the floor in the second quarter while forcing seven turnovers.
The halftime break gave way to a tightly contested third quarter where neither team was able to gain ground, as each scored 21 points. Cabrini opened up the second half with a 9-to-3 run, highlighted by seven points from Washington, to give them a 15 point cushion with 7:24 left in the third. The Knights, however answered with a 9-to-3 run of their own to cut the Cavs' lead back to just seven points. A pair of free throws from freshman
Lexi Edwards gave the Blue and White a nine point lead heading into the final stanza.
Cabrini would open up a game high 16 point lead to make it 60-44 with 6:06 left. A 14-to-6 run for the Knights proved to be too little too late as the Cabrini would hang on the for the 69-60 win.
The Cavs improve to 19-2 overall and widen their lead in the CSAC standings as they stay perfect at 12-0. They will look to tie the program's longest win streak since the 2014-15 season at 18 games when they travel to Baltimore, MD to take on CSAC foe Notre Dame of MD University. Game time is slated for 7pm.
