First Half Deficit Too Much to Overcome for Cavaliers

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team scored nine consecutive goals to erase an eight goal first half deficit but could not hold on, as it suffered a 19-16 loss to Haverford College today at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

The loss drops the Cavaliers to 1-3 on the season, while the Fords improved to 3-1.

Juniors Avery Murphy and Liz Hoeffner provided the offense for the Blue and White, combining for 18 points on the day.

Murphy recorded a career best 11 points on eight goals and three assists to go with four ground balls and four caused turnovers.  Hoeffner marked the scoring column seven time on just eight shots and secured five draw controls.

Senior Jackie Neary paired six draw controls, five cause turnovers and six ground balls, while sophomore Mattie Porter caused four turnovers and scooped five ground balls. Juniors Emma Rodner-Tims and Katie Kucia also forced three miscues.

Junior goaltender Devon Scharf and sophomore Noelia Ramirez combined for five saves.

Despite early goals by Murphy and Hoeffner, the Fords rattled off six unanswered goals to take a commanding 7-2 lead with 13:29 left in the opening half. Hoeffner's second goal of the contest briefly interrupted the Haverford scoring run at the 9:51 mark.

The Fords responded with back to back goals before Hoeffner completed her hat trick with 7:15 left in the half. Another three Haverford goals pushed its lead to 12-4 with just 6:10 remaining in the first half.

That's when Murphy made her mark on the game. In a span of just over two minutes, the junior found the net four times to pull the Cavaliers to within 12-8. Hoeffner's goal with 39 seconds to play sent the Blue and White into the half trailing 12-9 but carrying all of the game's momentum.

Cabrini's scoring run extended into the second half, as Hoeffner, Rodner-Tims and Murphy marked the scoring column in the opening 3:22 of the stanza to even the score. Murphy's seventh tally came at the 19:18 mark, giving the Cavaliers their first lead since leading 2-1 less than two minutes into the game.

The Fords evened the score just 29 seconds later. The score remained tied at 13 for the next six minutes, but a two minute non-releasable penalty on the Cavaliers gave Haverford the opening it needed.

During the two minute advantage, the Fords recorded three goals and added another 34 seconds after the penalty to build a 17-13 lead with 9:08 to play.

Murphy and Hoeffner added goals to cut the deficit in half, but the Fords took advantage of Cabrini's aggressive defense to add late goals, maintaining their three goal lead.

Rina Rosnow led the Fords with five goals, while Kate Sollee scored four times, including three goals in the decisive four minute span of the second half. Sarah Svetec and Anna Myers controlled five draws each, while goaltender Rachel Romens paired nine saves and three ground balls.

The Cavaliers will look to rebound as they visit Widener University (1-3) on Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 7pm in Chester, PA.
