Baseballs Earns Double Header Split Against Wells College

Aberdeen, MD - The Cabrini baseball team earned a hard fought spit of today's double header against the Wells College Express as the Cavs took game one by a 12-9 final, but dropped game two 5-4.

Game 1: Cabrini 12, Wells 9
Freshman Corey Hunt pitched a superb five innings for the Blue and White as the rookie faced just three over the minimum and allowed three hits, while striking out five and not surrendering a walk for his second win of the season.

Classmate JD Barrett led the way offensively for the Diamond Cavs as he finished 3-5 with two runs and two RBI's. Senior Brett Kuchera (1-5, 2B), sophomore Vince Gares (1-4) and freshman Justin Henry (1-5) each tallied two RBI's, while sophomore Alex Del Giudice tallied three hits, two runs and an RBI.

The Cavs pushed across the game's first run in the second inning as freshman Mack McKisson roped a triple to right center to plate Del Giudice, then followed it up with six runs in the fourth to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Back-to-back singles from Henry and McKisson put runners on first and third for Barrett who promptly doubled down the right field line to score his classmates. Kuchera and redshirt freshman Steven Priest pushed the lead to 7-0 as they strung together a double and single, respectively.

Cabrini added five more in the fifth off a two RBI single from Gares, followed by an RBI walk from junior John Lindeborn and a single from Del Giudice.

The Express would claw their way back as they scored nine unanswered runs in the game's final four innings, but proved to be too little, too late as Cabrini would hold on for the 12-9 win.

Game 2: Cabrini 4, Wells 5
Game two featured strong pitching performances from both teams as freshman Griffin Hays earned the start for Cabrini and battled through five innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out two.

Hays was matched pitch for pitch by Express starter Jared Strait who tossed five shutdown innings, as he allowed just four hits and struck out six. Strait featured a strong curveball that kept the Cabrini offense off balance throughout his five innings of work.

Seven different Cavs recorded one hit each, led by freshman Brett Swire who picked up a two RBI single in the sixth.

Wells led 2-0 as the Cavaliers entered the bottom of the sixth, but back-to-back walks from Del Giudice and Butler had the Cabrini offense threatening with nobody out. Three consecutive singles from McKisson, Swire and freshman Brian Protesto gave the Blue and White the 3-2 lead with runners still on first and second.

After a Barrett walk to load the bases, Wells' reliever Zach Kemp hit Kuchera to force home a run and make it a 4-2 Cavalier lead. A groundout from Del Giudice would ultimately end the inning.

The Express would rally in the top of the eighth, however as they pushed across three runs to take a 5-4 lead. Cabrini would go down quietly in their half of the eighth and ninth to cap game two.

After today's action, the Blue and White move to 5-6 overall and will be back in action on Saturday, March 17th when they host St. Joseph's College - Brooklyn for a double dip at Cabrin Carroll Field. First pitch is slated for noon.
