EWING, NJ – The Cabrini softball team engaged in a pitcher's duel today at The College of New Jersey, as the Blue and White scored a 2-1 win in the first game of today's nonconference doubleheader, before falling 8-0 in the nightcap.
With today's results, the Cavaliers moved to 4-8 on the season, while the Lions improved to 12-4.
TCNJ entered today's games as one of the nation's top offenses, ranking 16th in the country, scoring 8.79 runs per game, while its .403 batting average ranked 12th.
Senior pitcher
Jess Giordano was up to the task as she entered the circle for today's opener. The senior expertly navigated the TCNJ line-up, scattering eight hits over seven innings of work.
While the Lions put runners on base, Giordano kept them at bay, as no TCNJ player reached third base until the bottom of the seventh inning.
While Giordano, was controlling the Lions' offense, the Cavaliers struggled to solve TCNJ hurler Sam Platt. The Cavaliers failed to get multiple runners on base until the sixth inning, when they got all of the offense they needed.
Senior
Chrissy Ferraro drew a walk to open then inning, before junior
Marissa Alpaugh plated the senior with a two run blast over the fence in left center field.
Cabrini carried its 2-0 lead into the top of the seventh, when it threatened again. Senior
Sarah Beckner reached third with two outs, but was stranded to end the inning.
The Lions finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh, as the club linked three singles before stranding a pair of base runners to end the game.
The Blue and White could not keep the Lions' offense quite in the nightcap, as TCNJ plated three runs on three hits in the first.
Cabrini threatened in the top of the third, loading the bases with two outs, before ending the frame with a ground out.
TCNJ took advantage, scoring two runs to extend its lead to 5-0. A three run homer in the fourth pushed Cabrini's deficit to 8-0, essentially ending the game, as the Cavaliers failed to score in the top of the fifth.
Sophomore
Alexandra Schell joined Giordano and Alpaugh with the Cavaliers' only three hits in the loss. Freshman
Casey Scheuren suffered the loss, after allowing seven earned runs on eight hits.
Cabrini will return to CSAC play on Thursday, as they visit Keystone College (1-7, 0-0 CSAC). First pitch for the conference doubleheader is slated for 3pm in La Plume, PA.
