RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini softball team pushed its current win streak to 10 games with today's 12-0 and 15-7 wins over Cairn University at Cabrini Field.
The Blue and White improved to 14-8 overall and 10-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference with its longest win streak since winning 11 straight in 2014
.
Cabrini built an early lead in the opener, as junior
Darian Caputo and senior
Chrissy Ferraro reached base to open the game. Junior
Marissa Alpaugh's double down the left field line scored Caputo, before Ferraro scored after a pair of infield errors by the Highlanders.
The Blue and White took advantage of another pair of Cairn miscues to score three runs in the second. Senior
Victoria Hall opened the inning with a walk before scoring on a bunt by freshman
Aysiah Cintron and a throwing error. Caputo's single scored Cintron before the junior stole second and scored on an Alpaugh single.
The Cavaliers essentially put the game away in the third inning, plating six runs on six hits, each coming with two outs in the inning. Caputo singled in senior
Sarah Beckner before Alpaugh and seniors
Jess Giordano and
Alexandria Ramos went back-to-back-to-back with RBI doubles to center field.
Cabrini added an insurance run in the fourth, as Cintron's single to right field scored fellow freshman
Casey Scheuren, who led off the inning with a double.
Giordano got much more offense than she needed to earn the victory in the pitcher's circle, as the senior allowed just two Cairn hits with six strikeouts in her complete game win.
Cintron and Alpaugh went 3-3 in the opener, as Alpaugh drove in three runs, one more than Caputo, who went 2-2 with two RBI and three runs scored.
The Cavaliers continued their hot hitting in the nightcap, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first. Caputo opened the frame with a triple to center field, scoring on a Alpaugh foul out. Ferraro drew a walk and matriculated around the base paths, crossing the plate on a Giordano ground out.
Ramos added a double, followed by a walk to sophomore
Alexandra Schell. Both advanced one bag on a wild pitch, before scoring on a single by freshman
Amber Seamen. Seamen then crossed the plate on Caupto's infield single.
The Highlanders also found some offense in the third inning, scoring three runs on four hits. The Cavaliers had an answer tallying seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning.
Seamen and Hall opened the frame with a pair of walks. Caputo's single scored Seamen before Hall scored on a failed pickoff attempt at third. Alpaugh's double to left scored Caputo. The Cavaliers loaded the bases with two outs, before Seamen cleared them with a three RBI double to left.
Cairn added four runs in the top of the fourth, pulling within 13-7.
The Blue and White looked to close the game in the fifth, needing just two runs. Alpaugh led off the frame with a single before stealing second. The junior then scored on a throwing error. Cabrini could not add the needed run, as it stranded two runners to end the inning.
Scheuren kept the Highlanders off the base paths in the top of the sixth, giving the Cavaliers another chance for a walkoff win in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman
Olivia Young opened the inning with a single through the left side. The rookie advanced to second on a bunt single by classmate
Jess Redding and scored on a Cairn throwing error.
Caputo and Ramos led the Cavaliers with three hits each and two runs scored. Seamen went 2-3 with two runs scored and a season-high five RBI.
Junior hurler
Jenna Rodriguez tossed three innings to earn the victory, while Scheuren and senior
Emily Smull saw action in relief.
The Cavaliers have little time to enjoy today's victories, as they will try to extend their win streak tomorrow, as they visit Rosemont College (6-13, 0-10 CSAC). First pitch of the CSAC doubleheader is slated for 12 noon in Rosemont, PA.
