RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini softball team blasted seven home runs today, as the Cavaliers rolled to a pair of wins over Notre Dame of Maryland University today at Cabrini Field.
The Blue and White posted 19-0 and 13-0 victories, improving to 18-8 overall and 14-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. The wins also extend the team's current win streak to 14 games, tying the 2004 team with the fourth longest win streak in program history.
After scoring a single run in the first inning of the opener, the Cavaliers put the game out of reach in the second inning, plating eight runs on nine hits.
Senior
Sarah Beckner opened the frame with a walk, before scoring on senior
Victoria Hall's first home run of the season. Three straight singles loaded the bases, with each running scoring on senior
Jess Giordano's grand slam over the center field wall.
Classmate
Alexandria Ramos then stepped to the plate and sent a ball over the right field wall for a 9-0 lead.
Beckner joined the home run club in the third inning with the first of her two grand slams in the game. The senior's second came in the fourth inning, as her blast down the left field line bounced off the fair pole.
Ten Cavaliers accounted for the team's 22 hits in the win, with Ramos going 4-4 with three runs scored. Senior
Chrissy Ferraro joined Giordano with three hits each, while Giordano and Beckner combined for 13 RBI.
Giordano was in complete control in the pitcher's circle, surrendering just two hits with five strikeouts over four innings to earn her eighth win of the season.
The Blue and White's bats stayed hot into the nightcap, as the Cavaliers opened the game with 12 runs on 13 hits in the first inning.
The first 12 batters to step into the box reached base safely, highlighted by RBI doubles by junior
Marissa Alpaugh and Giordano, before both scored on Ramos' second home of the day. The Cavaliers again loaded the bases before Alpaugh clubbed the team's third grand slam of the afternoon, marking the junior's fourth home run of the year.
Cabrini added another run in the second, as freshman
Casey Scheuren's RBI single scored classmate
Jess Redding.
Ferraro went 4-4 in the nightcap, while freshman
Amber Seamen went 3-3, as 12 Cavaliers combined for the team's 21 base hits. Ten Cavaliers also scored at least one run, with seven notching at least one RBI.
Like Giordano in the opener, Scheuren never allowed the Gators to get on track, as the rookie scattered three hits over five innings with seven strike outs.
The Cavaliers have little time to revel in today's wins, as they will return to Cabrini Field for an important conference doubleheader tomorrow. Cabrini will host Immaculata University (17-12, 10-3) on Saturday at 12 noon in the teams' annual cancer awareness game.
This will mark the fifth consecutive year the teams have added special meaning to their doubleheader. Former Cabrini head coach Mitch Kline and Immaculata head coach Mike Wallace began the tradition in 2014, as Kline was raising money for leukemia research. With Kline losing his battle against cancer in 2016, the game has taken on increased importance for both programs.
