RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini softball team saw its current win streak come to an end today, as the Cavaliers split a pair of thrilling games with Immaculata University.
The Blue and White earned a walk-off 8-7 win in the opener, before falling 11-9 in nine innings in the night cap. Today's results moved the Cavaliers to 19-9 overall and 15-3 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
Cabrini's doubleheader against Immaculata has taken on additional meaning over the last five years, as the teams have dedicated the games to the fight against cancer. With the passing of former Cabrini softball coach Mitch Kline, who along with Immaculata head coach Mike Wallace began the cancer awareness game, the day has become even more important to the players and coaches, who compete in Kline's honor.
While the Cavaliers wore special jerseys dedicated to Kline and his late wife Sandee, the Mighty Macs wore pink socks for the game.
Following the games, both teams spoke about Kline's importance to both programs before holding a moment of silence and releasing balloons in memory of Mitch and Sandee.
Despite senior
Jess Giordano's RBI single giving the Cavaliers an early lead in the opener, the Mighty Macs were in control of the action. Immaculata scored seven unanswered runs, as Cabrini recorded just two hits through five innings.
Trailing 7-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Blue and White began an improbable comeback. Junior
Darian Caputo drew a walk to open the inning, before advancing to second on a bunt base hit by senior
Chrissy Ferraro.
Two batters later, Giordano cleared the bags with a three run homer over the center field fence, cutting Immaculata's lead to 7-4.
Looking for insurance runs, the Mighty Macs loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but Giordano stranded all three runners, sending the Blue and White back to the plate.
Freshman
Amber Seamen opened the inning with a walk, before advancing to third on back to back bunts by senior
Victoria Hall and freshman
Aysiah Cintron. Caputo and Ferraro then drew bases loaded walks to pull the Cavaliers to within 7-6 with no outs.
Junior
Marissa Alpaugh put an end to the game, as her double to center plated Cintron and Caputo to give the Blue and White the 8-7 win.
Giordano accounted for two of the Cavaliers' seven hits in the win and drove in four runs. The senior also earned the pitching victory after allowing five earned runs with five strike outs.
The Mighty Macs built an early lead in the nightcap as well, as sophomore Ashley Rey paired a two run homer in the first with a grand slam in the second, giving the visitors a 6-0 lead.
Cabrini began to chip away in the third, as Ferraro's sacrifice fly scored Cintron. Immaculata added two runs in the fourth, but a home run by senior
Alexandria Ramos pulled the Cavaliers to within 8-2 through four innings.
The Cavaliers erased another run in the fifth, as Alpaugh's groundout sent Cintron across the plate.
The Blue and White completed its comeback in the sixth inning, notching five runs on five hits.
Sophomore
Alexandra Schell opened frame with a triple down the right field line, before scoring on a groundout by Seamen. Two batters later, Cintron singled before scoring on Caputo's double to center. Ferraro reached with a bunt before Apaugh evened the score with a three run blast, her fifth of the season.
The Mighty Macs regained the momentum in the top of the seventh, retaking a 9-8 lead.
Cabrini again had an answer. Down to its final out, Seamen came through in a big way, hitting her first career home run over the left field fence, tying the score at 9-9.
After a scoreless eighth, the Mighty Macs plated the winning runs in the top of the ninth, while not allowing the Cavaliers to reach base in either of the extra innings.
Cintron went 3-4 with three runs scored to lead the Cavaliers, while Alpaugh drove in four runs, joining Caputo and Seamen with two hits in the nightcap.
Senior
Emily Smull suffered the loss after allowing two runs in five innings of relief.
The Cavaliers will step out of conference play on Wednesday, as they visit Lebanon Valley College (15-11, 9-5 MAC Commonwealth). The doubleheader is slated for 3pm in Annville, PA.
