Langhorne, PA - The Cabrini baseball team evened their overall record at 15-15 this afternoon behind a pair of strong pitching performances against Cairn University from freshmen
Corey Hunt and
Griffin Hays.
Game One: Cabrini 6, Cairn 1
Corey Hunt tossed a complete game gem in the front end of the day's double header as the freshman scattered nine hits across seven innings, limiting the host Highlanders to just one run. The rookie stranded a total of seven runners and struck out two to secure his fourth victory of the season.
Offensively, fellow freshman
Mack McKisson continued his hot play as he marked the hit column three times, highlighted by two triples and three RBI's. His .465 batting average ranks second in the conference, while his .698 slugging percentage ranks third.
Freshman
JD Barrett (2-4, 2 R, 1 RBI), sophomore
Vince Gares (2-3, 1 R) and senior
Brett Kuchera (2-3, 1 R) each tallied two hits, while junior
John Lindeborn (1-4, 1 R) and sophomore
Joe Aurite (1-4, 2 RBI) tallied one hit a piece.
Aurite delivered the first blow in the game's second frame with a two RBI double to right center field to plate Gares and Kuchera. The 2-0 lead would quickly be cut in half following a Highlander RBI single off the bat of Jonathan Jaynes.
Cabrini would quickly get the run back in the top of the third as McKisson guided a seeing eye single to second to plate Lindeborn.
The Cavs would add two insurance runs in the fourth and another in the seventh off of extra base hits from Barrett and McKisson to coast to the comfortable 6-1 final.
Game Two: Cabrini 4, Cairn 2
The Blue and White doubled down in the back end of the double header with more stout pitching as fellow rookie
Griffin Hays collected his third victory of the year following 6.2 strong innings. The freshman marked a new career high with five strikeouts to retake the team lead with 22 K's on the year.
Aurite followed up his game one performance with three RBI's in game two as the sophomore delivered the eventual game winning hit with a bases clearing double in the top of the sixth.
Lindeborn and junior
Tyler Norris collected two hits each in five at-bats, while Barrett, Gares and senior
Dylan Butler collected the Cavaliers' remaining hits.
The Cavs did all their damage in the fourth inning as Lindeborn and McKisson led off the inning with a double and a walk, respectively. Following a Kuchera lineout that allowed Lindeborn to move to third, Gares delivered a single right score the speedy shortstop and give the Blue and White the 1-0 lead.
Two batters later, freshman
Brian Protesto was hit by pitcher Eric Stinglen to load the bases for Aurite. Aurite delivered with a two out, bases clearing double to center to push the Cavaliers' lead to 4-0.
The Highlanders would threaten late, but managed just two runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a two run shot from Daniel Morales.
Freshman
Chris Huyette (2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K) would come on in relief of Hays with two outs in the seventh and shut the door on the Highlanders, collecting his first save of the season and securing the victory in the process.
Following today's action the Cavs improve to 15-15 overall and 4-6 in conference play. They will look to extend their winning streak when they travel to Widener University on Monday, April 23rd. First pitch is slated for 4pm.
