Softball Celebrates Senior Day with 2 Wins over Cedar Crest

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini softball team celebrated Senior Day with a pair of important Colonial States Athletic Conference victories today at Cabrini Field.

The Cavaliers topped Cedar Crest 3-2 and 9-5 to improve to 21-9 overall and 17-3 in the conference with just two games remaining in the regular season.

Between games, the Cavaliers honored its nine seniors, Marissa Alpaugh, Sarah Beckner, Chrissy Ferraro, Jess Giordano, Victoria Hall, Alexandria Ramos, Jenna Rodriguez, Emily Smull and manager Hannah Krady.

This group has led the Cavaliers to 92 victories and three trips to the second day of the CSAC Tournament. They have combined to hit .335 over their collective careers with 742 hits, 456 runs scored, 42 home runs and 389 RBI. They captured 50 victories in the pitcher's circle with 316 strike outs.

A pair of those seniors were keys to Cabrini's win in the opener. Beckner clubbed her third home of the season in the second inning, staking Giordano, the game's starting pitcher, with a 1-0 lead.

While the Blue and White struggled to find its offense, Giordano kept the Falcons off balance, holding them to just five hits through five innings. Cedar Crest finally broke through in the sixth, as it took advantage of two Cabrini errors to plate two runs to take a 2-1 lead.

The lead was short-lived, as the Cavaliers stormed back in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Alexandra and Beckner opened the inning with walks, before Hall's bunt single loaded the bags with one out.  Freshman Aysiah Cintron scored Schell with an infield single before Beckner crossed the plate on a fielder's choice by junior Darian Caputo.

The Falcons looked to rally in the top of the seventh, as its first two batter reached safely, but Giordano quickly shut the door, recording the next three batters to secure the 3-2 win.

Ferraro recorded two of Cabrini's seven hits in the win, while Beckner drove in a pair of runs. Giordano did not allow an earned run and struck out four in the victory.

The Cavaliers did not allow the Senior Day ceremony to slow its offense as it scored runs in the first and second innings of the night cap. An unearned run in the first and a bases loaded walk in the second put the Blue and White ahead 2-0 after two innings.

The Falcons evened the score in the top of the third, but the Cavaliers pulled away with five runs in the fourth.

Cintron, Caputo and Ferraro opened the frame with singles, before Alpaugh's sacrifice fly scored Cintron. Giordano then drove in a run, as her fielder's choice plated Caputo. Two batters later, Schell drove in Giordano and Ramos with a two-RBI triple down the left field line. The sophomore then scored on a single through the left side by freshman Amber Seamen, putting the Cavaliers ahead 7-2.

Fighting for their postseason lives, the Falcons responded in the fifth, pulling within 7-5 with three runs on three hits.  Likewise, the Blue and White had an answer in the bottom of the frame. Alpaugh's double to left field scored Ferraro and Caputo, before Ferraro scored on a Giordano sacrifice fly.

Smull then stepped into the pitcher's circle in relief of freshman Casey Scheuren, pitching two innings of one hit ball to seal the win.

Scheuren earned the victory after allowing five earned runs on eight hits through five innings. Ferraro paced the offense with a 4-4 game with two runs scored. Caputo tallied three hits, while Alpaugh and Schell recorded two hits each and combined for five RBI.

The Cavaliers have little time to enjoy today's victories, as they will visit Gwynedd Mercy (27-4, 18-1 CSAC) on Sunday. First pitch of the conference doubleheader is scheduled for 12pm.
