Late Goal Downs Men's Lacrosse at No. 11 Salisbury

SALISBURY, MD – The Cabrini men's lacrosse team saw its four game win streak come to an end today, as the No. 5 Cavaliers suffered a 9-8 loss at No. 11 Salisbury.

The loss dropped the Blue and White to 10-2 overall, while the Gulls improved to 10-3.

The Cavaliers trailed by as many as three goals with 5:45 to player in the third quarter, when the Blue and White began its comeback.

Sophomore Matt LoParo found junior Timmy Brooks with two minutes left in the third to pull Cabrini to within 8-6 with 15 minutes to play.

Junior Jordan Krug and Brooks marked the scoring column in the opening minutes of the final quarter, as the Blue and White evened the score at 8-8 with 10 minutes to play.

The Cavaliers created several chances over the next three minutes, but each of their three attempts missed the back of the net. The Gulls took advantage, as Emory Wongus scored the eventual game-winner at the 6:50 mark.

Despite outshooting Salisbury 6-2 over the final six minutes and earning an extra-man opportunity, the Cavaliers could not convert their changes.

Brooks paced the Cabrini offensive attack with three goals, while Krug matched Brooks' three points on a goal and two assists. LoParo paired a goal and an assist.

Senior Riley Michaels went 8-19 at the faceoff spot and scooped a team-high five ground balls, one more than classmate Ethan Trusty and sophomore Tommy DeLuca, who also caused two turnovers.

Junior goaltender Riley White suffered the loss despite pairing nine saves and three ground balls.

The Cavaliers fell behind early, as Salisbury netted the game's first two goals and led 3-1 after the first quarter, despite Brooks' man-up goal late in the first.

LoParo scored in the first minute of the second quarter, but a pair of Gulls' goals re-established the home team's three goal cushion.

Sophomores Kevin Leyden and Mike Gerzabek recorded goals in 40 second span midway through the second quarter, as Cabrini carried its 5-4 deficit into the halftime break.

Sophomore Ty Kostack evened the score at 5-5 at the 10:49 mark of the third period, but Salisbury responded with three unanswered goals in three minutes to build its 8-5 lead.

The Blue and White outshot the Gulls 38-29 on the day, but 19 of Salisbury's shots were on target to just 17 for Cabrini.

Wongus and Corey Gwin scored three goals each for Salisbury, while goaltender Brandon Warren matched White with nine saves.

The Blue and White have a few days to regroup before returning to CSAC play next Saturday with a visit from Centenary University. The Cavaliers will celebrate the careers of its sic seniors, Zack Gregory, Joey Hoey, Robby Jennette, Michaels, Josh Moore and Trusty prior to the 1pm start.
