RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini softball team finally made as appearance at Cabrini Field today, as the Cavaliers topped Clarks Summit University 15-1 and 15-0 in today's home opener.
The Blue and White recorded season-highs in runs and hits as it improved to 10-8 overall and 6-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
Cabrini jumped ahead in the bottom of the first inning, plating six runs. The Cavaliers took advantage of five hits, including RBI doubles by junior
Marissa Alpaugh and senior
Victoria Hall, and a trio of Defenders miscues.
Clarks Summit got on the board in the top of the second, as freshman Molly Ayala's solo home run marked one of the team's two hits in the opener.
The Cavaliers added a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, as sophomore
Alexandra Schell and Hall drove in runs.
The Blue and White put up another six spot in the third, as 11 Cavaliers stepped into the batter's box. The highlight of the frame came early, as senior Alexandra Ramos blasted her first career home run, a shot over the left field wall.
Senior
Emily Smull closed the scoring in the fourth inning, as her lead-off solo homer to right center extended Cabrini's lead to 15-1.
Twelve Cavaliers accounted for the team's 16 hits in the win, with senior
Jess Giordano's three leading the way. Hall and classmate
Chrissy Ferraro notched two each, while Ramos drove in a career high four runs.
Giordano earned the victory in the pitcher's circle, allowing just one hit against a season-high seven strikeouts in three innings of work.
Cabrini showed no let-up in the nightcap, as six of its 10 hits went for extra bases.
Three consecutive walks sent the game's first run across the plate before a double to left center by sophomore
Alexandra Schell scored Giordano and Alpaugh, as the Cavaliers built a 5-0 lead after one inning.
The Blue and White's next 10 runs came on the strength of the long ball, as the Cavaliers clubbed four homers over the next three innings.
Alpaugh crushed her first home run of the day, a two-run blast in the second. Three batters later, Schell recorded her first of the season, a three-run shot over the right field fence.
Alpaugh added another round-tripper in the third, sending the ball over the wall in left center for a two-run homer and a 12-0 lead.
Freshman
Olivia Young got into the act in the fourth inning, recording her first career home run, a three-run blast to left center.
Alpaugh and Schell tallied two hits each, with Schell compiling a career high five RBI. Alpaugh drove in four runs and matched Ferraro with three runs scored.
Freshman
Casey Scheuren earned the victory after scattering two hits over three innings before Smull tossed two innings of no-hit ball.
The Cavaliers have little time to enjoy todays wins, as they hit the road for a pair of contests on Sunday. Cabrini will visit Marywood University (6-9, 3-2 CSAC) for a CSAC doubleheader beginning at 1pm in Scranton, PA.
