Baseball Falls to Giants on Day One of CSAC Tournament

La Plume, PA - The Cabrini baseball team couldn't hold off the surging Keystone College Giants this afternoon as the Giants scored three runs across the seventh and eighth innings to steal the 5-3 win on day one of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) tournament.

Freshman Corey Hunt was tabbed as the starter for the Blue and White and turned in a strong performance against the No. 1 seeded and No. 19 ranked Giants. The rookie nearly matched his effort from the last time he faced Keystone on April 6th (6IP, 5H, 2ER), tossing 5.2 innings in today's contest and allowing just two runs on eight hits. He exited the game in line for the victory, but Keystone found success against freshman reliever Griffin Hays.

Hays was ultimately saddled with the loss as he allowed two hits and two runs in .2 of an inning.

Offensively, the Blue and White were led by sophomore Steven Priest who finished 2-4 with an RBI triple and a run scored. Sophomores Vince Gares, Joe Aurite and Alex Del Giudice, along with senior Brett Kuchera, split the Cavs' remaining four hits with one each.

Keystone jumped out to the early lead as Dakota McFadden lofted a fly ball to left for a sac fly in the top of the first to take the 1-0 lead.

Hunt would settle in and pick up some run support from his offense in the top of the second. Following a single to left from Gares, who advanced to second thanks to an error from the left fielder, Priest delivered his aforementioned triple down the right field line to score Gares easily. Cabrini would add another as the Giants traded an out for a run thanks to a groundout from senior Dylan Butler

An RBI single to left off the bat of Kuchera in the top of the third would extend the Cavs' lead to 3-1.

The Giants cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth off an RBI single up the middle from Ryan Callahan and loaded the bases in the sixth forcing Hunt to exit after 5.2 innings. Hays would enter and retire Callahan looking to end the inning and escape trouble.

Keystone broke through in the seventh, however, as Mohammad Hussein worked out a walk to start the inning and went first to third off a single from Alejandro Monteverde. Another sac fly from McFadden evened the score at three apiece. After Hays hit Ronald Medina with an 0-1 fastball, left fielder Adam Kelly roped a single to center to score the eventual winning run in Monteverde.

The hosts would add an insurance run in the eighth off junior Tyler Ronayne as Eric Drzewiecki took the hard throwing closer deep to left center on the first pitch of the at-bat.

Two time CSAC pitcher of the year Troy Terzi would come on in the ninth to close out the game for the Giants and preserve their day one victory.

Following today's action, the Cavaliers will face the Neumann Knights in an elimination game on Friday, May 11th at Owls Field at Ted Palka Park in West Lawn, PA . Game time is slated for 3pm.
