Men's Soccer Holds on for 1-1 Tie with Cairn

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's soccer team scored a tie today in its showdown with former Colonial States Athletic Conference foe Cairn University today at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

The 1-1 draw moved the Cavaliers to 2-3-1 on the season, while the Highlanders moved to 1-3-1.

It took just seconds for the Blue and White to build an early lead, as the Cabrini offense took advantage a bad pass back to the Cairn goalkeeper.  Sophomore John Griffin pressured the keeper and eventually took the ball from him and deposited it in the net for a 1-0 lead just 80 seconds after the opening whistle.

Unfortunately, the Cavaliers could not build on their early lead. Cabrini recorded just three first half shots and two corner kicks before the break.

On the other side of the pitch, the Blue and White defense kept the Highlanders at bay, as Cairn match the Cavaliers' three shots and two corner kicks in the first half.

Both teams continued to battle, Cabrini to maintain its slim lead and Cairn to even the score. The Highlanders' pressure paid off in the 81st minute. A Cabrini foul near midfield gave Cairn a direct kick.

Senior Tyler Smith's service found classmate Paul Franco streaking toward the goal for the equalizer with just under 10 minutes to play.

The Cavaliers created a scoring chance in the 89th minute, but an goal was overturned due to an offside violation.

While neither team created a solid scoring chance in the first overtime, both had visions of the game-winner in the second extra frame.

In the 105th minute, Cabrini senior Jared Irwin broke through the Cairn defense, but was thwarted by the Highlanders' freshman goaltender Kameron Clark.

Two minutes later, the Highlanders created their chance, but Cabrini's sophomore netminder Anthony Zampirri notched his second save of the day to maintain the deadlock.

The Cavaliers finished the day with eight shots, four fewer than the Highlanders. Griffin accounted for three of the shots, while Irwin and fellow senior Matt Ochman added two each.

The Cavaliers will return to action om Wednesday, when they make the trip to Wilkes-Barre, PA to face King's College (3-2-1). Kickoff is slated for 7pm.
