Men's Soccer Scores 1st Win in Double Overtime

CENTER VALLEY, PA – The Cabrini men's soccer team scored its first win of the season in dramatic fashion today, as the Cavaliers downed DeSales University 1-0 in double overtime.

The win improved the Blue and White to 1-2 on the year and handed the Bulldogs their first loss in three contests.

Both teams played an even opening 45 minutes, recording four shots each and combining for five corner kicks. Cabrini and DeSales turned up their respective offensive attacks in the second half, combining for 13 shots.

The scoreless draw headed into overtime, but it was the Bulldogs who gained an offensive advantage. DeSales recorded the only two shots of the first extra period, but Cabrini's sophomore goaltender Anthony Zampirri responded with a pair of saves.

After 107 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Cavaliers drew a free kick at midfield, which proved to be the opportunity the Blue and White needed.

Senior Sal Zampirri Jr. served a ball into the penalty area that found the forehead of classmate Matt Ochman. The senior defender's header found the back of the net, earning Cabrini's first win of 2018.

Cabrini recorded a season-high 12 shots, including four on target. Nine Cavaliers fired at least one shot on the day, with Zampirri joining fellow senior Jared Irwin and sophomore Ray Wilson with two each.

Zampirri tallied his second career shutout, recording seven saves in his first start of the season.

Michael Kirby and Zach Reichard recorded four shots each for DeSales, while goaltender TJ Corcoran posted three saves in the loss.

The Blue and White will return to action on Saturday, when they head south to Ashland, VA to face Randolph Macon College (2-1). Game time is set for 1pm.
