Men's Basketball Rides Hot 2nd Half to 76-60 Win at Wells

AURORA, NY – The Cavaliers improved to 2-0 on the young season today, as the Cabrini men's basketball team scored a 76-60 win at Wells College at the Finger Lakes Classic.

Five Cavaliers recorded at least five points in the win, with three players reaching double figures.

Junior DJ Smith and sophomore Voshon Mack were named to the classic's All-Tournament team after leading the Blue and White in points and rebounds, respectively, in today's win.  Smith led the team with 21 points, including six made three pointers, while Mack added his second double-double in as many games, pairing 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Senior Keith Blassingale added 16 points, with senior Jarren Abad and junior Justin Gans adding seven points each.

Cabrini struggled to find its touch in the first half, as Wells built a double-figure lead midway through the first half and trailed by as many as 12 points with six minutes left in the first half.

The Cavaliers responded with a 10-0 run, as an Abad steal led to a Mack lay-up that pulled Cabrini to within 25-23 with 2:24 left.

Despite shooting just 9-23 from the field, including 1-10 from three point range, with 18 turnovers, Cabrini trailed just 30-26 at the half.

The Express pushed its lead to 37-36 at the 18:16 mark when Cabrini turned the game around. Over the next 7:26, the Cavaliers outscored Wells 23-3 to build a 52-40 lead on junior Billy Warren's lay-up. The Blue and White used its defense to spark the run as it held the Express to just 1-12 shooting during the streak.

Wells cut into the Cabrini lead, pulling to within 55-49 at the 7:02 mark, but the Blue and White again had an answer, pulling away with a 21-6 run to build a game-high 21 point lead in the game's final minutes.

After struggling with its shooting touch in the first half, the Cavaliers shot a blistering .621 after the break, connecting on nine of its 16 second half three point attempts.

The solid play extended to the defensive end of the court as well, where Wells shot just over .300 in the second half and corralled just 11 rebounds to 29 for Cabrini.

Jalen Tribble led Wells (0-2) with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Ty McBride added 11 points and five assists.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Tuesday, when they make he short trip across Eagle Road for its annual meeting with Eastern (0-1). The 2019 iteration of the Battle for Eagle Road will begin with the women's game at 6pm, with the men to follow at 8pm.
