Cold Shooting Dooms Men's Basketball in Eastern Loss

ST. DAVIDS, PA – The Cabrini men's basketball team could not continue its hot shooting from last weekend's wins, as the Cavaliers shot just .324 from the floor tonight, falling to Eastern 67-57.

The loss marks the Blue and White's second consecutive defeat in the annual Battle for Eagle Road, the first time Cabrini (2-1) has lost back to back meetings since 2005-06 and 2006-07.

Sophomore Voshon Mack continued his hot start to the season, pairing 15 points and 15 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Senior Keith Blassingale scored 12 points, while sophomore Ryan Byars added nine points off the bench.

Cabrini's offensive struggles began in the early minutes of the game, as the Blue and White needed 11 minutes to reach 10 points. The Eagles took full advantage, building a 13 point lead with 12:37 left in the first half.

Trailing 28-16 with four minutes left in the first half, the Cavaliers made a run. Cabrini closed the opening stanza on a 10-0 run, pulling to within 28-26 at the half.

Eastern quelled the Cabrini comeback early in the second half, as it slowly pushed its lead back to 10 points at 42-32 with 13:33 to play.

Down 58-49 with just over four minutes to play, the Blue and White looked to make one final run.

Blassingdale's lay-up cut the deficit to 58-51. The senior recorded a steal on Eastern's next possession then hit junior Justin Gans for a three, pulling the Cavaliers to within 58-54.

Unfortunately, the Blue and White would get no closer, as the Eagles responded with a quick 6-0 spurt to regain its 10 points cushion.

The Cavaliers held the Eagles to just .385 shooting on the night, including 4-19 from three point range, and forced 20 turnovers.

Cabrini, however, could not take advantage of its stingy defense, as it connected on just .324 of its field goal attempts, including 2-16 from beyond the three point line and 11-19 from the free throw line.

The Cavaliers also could not overcome Eastern's size, as the Eagles built a 56-37 rebounding edge, including 20 offensive boards that led to 17 second half points for the home team.

Senior Michael Bowlers led all scorers with 17 points, while junior William Blet paired 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles (1-1).

Cabrini will look to rebounds on Friday, as it heads to Glassboro, NJ for the Stockton Tip-Off Tournament. The Cavaliers will face Albright (1-0) on Friday at 8pm, before playing at 1 or 3pm on Saturday.
