Women's Basketball Collects Nonconference Victory Over Violets

RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team improved to 4-1 this afternoon following a key 74-65 nonconference victory over the visiting New York University Violets.

Junior Ashley Tutzauer paced the offense with 24 points, while adding five rebounds and four steals. Classmate Lexi Edwards contributed 18 points after finishing 7-12 from the field, while junior Kate Lannon and senior Cassidy Gallagher chipped in 10 points each to round of the Cavaliers in double figures.

The Blue and White opened the game on a 10-3 run, capped by a Gallagher triple, to seize the momentum early. An ensuing 8-0 run in favor of the Violets handed NYU the 11-10 advantage midway through the opening stanza. A three from Tutzauer and Gallagher sandwiched a layup from NYU's Brooklyn Shelton to put the Cavs up 16-15. The visitors would drill back to back triples to end the quarter with a 21-16 advantage.

The Cavaliers defense took control in the second quarter as they held NYU without a field goal on 14 attempts. The Violets' lone three points came on free throws while the Cavalier offense feasted in the paint, collecting 10 of their 20 second quarter points inside the lane. Gallagher and Tutzuauer combined for 11 of the Cavs' 20 points, while freshman Katie Rodriguez made her presence felt on the defensive end with a trio of blocked shots.

Despite leading 36-24 to begin the third quarter, the Cavs' offense picked up where they left off as they rattled off a 9-3 run to push their lead to a game high 18 points with 6:04 left in the quarter. A quick 7-0 spurt from the Violets trimmed the Cavs' lead back to 11 before Edwards answered with a driving and-one layup. The two teams would swap baskets to end the quarter.

Following a pair of free throws from Tutzauer to put the Cavs ahead 55-39 with 7:48 left in the game, the Violets used a 14-5 run to claw back to within seven points over the next four minutes of play. The visitors would get as close as five points with just over a minute remaining, but a layup from junior Caitlin King on the ensuing possession would put the game on ice. The Blue and White would hit all eight of the free throws down the stretch en route to the eventual 74-65 final.

NYU's Janean Cuffee led the Violets with 24 points on 26 shots, while Shelton added 16 points.

In total, the Cavs limited a high powered NYU offense to 34 percent from the field and forced 20 turnovers. They also held a decisive 34-18 advantage on points in the paint, while hitting 18-21 attempts from the charity stripe.

Following today's victory, the Cavaliers improve to 4-1 overall. They will look to add to their win total on Tuesday, November 26th when they travel to Rosemont, PA to face the Ravens. Tip off is slated for 7pm.
