RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team nearly capped a thrilling fourth quarter comeback, but the visiting Middlebury College Panthers managed to escape Nerney Field House with a 65-59 victory.
Junior
Ashley Tutzauer paced the Blue and White offense with a team high 19 points in 32 minutes of action, while the quartet of juniors
Kate Lannon and
Lexi Edwards, along with senior
Cassidy Gallagher and freshman
Miranda Liebtag added eight points each. Lannon and Gallagher tied for a team high five rebounds, while Liebtag tallied a team best three assists.
After a sluggish first quarter and a half in which the Blue and White shot just over 35 percent from the floor and trailed 28-17, the offense began to find their footing. A triple from Liebtag trimmed the Middlebury lead to 28-20 and kicked off a 13-2 run to end the half at 30 a piece. A pair of threes from Tutzauer sandwiched a driving layup from Edwards to put an exclamation point on a momentum shifting run.
The Panthers would respond, however as they opened the second half with an 8-2 run, highlighted by a deep three from Reagan McDonald with 4:43 left in the quarter. The two teams would swap baskets to close the stanza with the visitors clinging to a 46-42 lead.
The Cavaliers first possession of the fourth quarter shaved Middlebury's lead to 46-44 thanks to a baseline turnaround jumper from Lannon. A layup from Tutzauer ensued and evened things at 46 all with 7:45 left in the game. After trading buckets for the next three minutes, a three from Liebtag at the top of the arc handed the Cavs their first lead since the seven minute mark of the first quarter. Kira Waldman answered for Middlebury with a three of her own to retake lead at 58-56 with 2:31 remaining.
The Middlebury defense tightened in the closing minutes, holding the Cavs to 1-5 from the floor and forcing a key turnover to escape with the aforementioned 65-59 victory.
The Panthers' Betsy Knox led all scorers with 20 points and collected the double double thanks to 13 rebounds. Maya Davis added 17 points and nine reboudns, while Kira Waldman rounded out the scorers in double figures with 13 points.
Following today's setback, the Cavs move to 5-2 overall. They will look to get back in the win column on Saturday, December 7th when they travel to Brooklyn, NY to face Brooklyn College. Game time is slated for 1pm.
