ASTON, PA – The Cabrini volleyball team saw its 2019 campaign come to an end tonight, as the Cavaliers suffered a 3-0 loss at Neumann in the semifinal round of the Atlantic East Conference Tournament.
The 25-22, 25-18, 25-14 loss closes the Blue and White's season at 14-14 and snaps the program's run of 11 consecutive conference championship appearances.
The loss also closes the career of a senior
Katrina Shelly, who tallied more than 650 kills and 400 digs during her two seasons in the Blue and White.
Shelly led the Cavaliers in tonight's loss with 10 kills and seven digs, while junior
Steph Judkins added six kills and a team-high 10 digs.
Sophomore
Hannah Dalton tallied seven digs, four block assists and Cabrini's only two service aces. Classmate
Amelia Ballard posted nine assists, two more than freshman
Melanie Cotes-Rivera, while sophomore
Lexi Conte chipped in with six.
The Knights built a slim lead early in the opening set and, despite Cabrini pulling within one point several times, never relinquished their lead. A Shelly kill evened the score at 20-20, but the home team responded with a 4-0 spurt to take control of the set.
Neumann carried its momentum into the second set, building a 13-5 lead midway through the frame. The Cavaliers never regained their rhythm, as their deficit swelled as high as 17-7 before falling behind two sets to none.
The Knights' pressure continued to wear of the Cavaliers, as Neumann continued to control the action through the final frame, leading by as many as 10 points before closing the night's action.
Senior Melanie Malseed led the Knights (18-11) with 17 kills against just two errors, while sophomore Bre Hickey paired seven kills and 12 digs. Senior Rachel Cray posted a double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs, as classmate Hayley Glah chipped in with 16 digs and four service aces.
With tonight's win, Neumann advances to Saturday's championship match, where it will face top seeded Marymount (23-10). The Saints, the league's defending champion, scored a 3-1 win over Marywood in tonight's other semifinal match-up.
