RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini women's basketball team nearly overcame its worst shooting performance of the season in the opening game of the 2019 Cavalier Classic at Nerney Field House.
The Blue and White shot just 3-30 in the first half and rallied from a 17 point second quarter deficit before falling to Arcadia University 50-47.
Junior
Kate Lannon led the Cavaliers with 18 points and eight rebounds, while senior
Cassidy Gallagher added seven points, one more than juniors
Lexi Edwards and
Caitlin King.
The Cavaliers' holiday 10-day layoff was evident in the first quarter, as the Blue and White struggled on the offensive side of the floor. Cabrini missed each of its 17 field goal attempts and committed six turnovers in the opening 10-minute period.
While its offense struggled, Cabrini maintained its traditional stingy defensive, holding the Knights to just 4-10 shooting with eight turnovers.
Trailing 12-1 entering the second quarter, the Cavaliers found a bit of rhythm in the second, as Lannon connected on each of Cabrini's three second half field goals. Despite shooting just .100 from the field, including 0-11 from three point range, the Cavaliers trailed just 25-10 at the half.
Head coach
Kate Pearson's halftime adjustments paid dividends in the third quarter, as Cabrini outscored the Knights 23-12.
Looking up at a 34-21 lead midway through the frame, the Cavaliers went on a 12-1 run, pulling to within 35-33 on Gallagher's lay-up with 41 left in the quarter. A late foul allowed the visitors to push their lead to 37-33 with just 15 minutes to play.
The Blue and White completed its comeback with 4:40 left in the game, as junior
Ashley Tutzauer found King for a three and a 42-41 Cabrini lead. The advantage was short-lived, as Arcadia scored the game's next four points to regain its three point cushion with 2:25 to play.
One minute later, an Edwards offensive rebound led to an Arcadia foul, sending Lannon to the line, where she hit a pair of free throws, pulling Cabrini to within 45-44 with 1:15 to play.
Cabrini misfired on its next three field goal attempts with a chance to regain the lead. The Knights took advantage, draining 5-6 from the free throw line over the final 15 seconds to seal the victory.
After struggling with its offense in the first half, Cabrini responded in the second, hitting 14-32 with just five turnovers, while holding the Knights to .240 shooting with 12 second half turnovers.
Senior Taylor Dunn led the Knights (8-4) with 22 points, while junior Taylor Fritz paired 11 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
The Cavaliers (7-3) have little time to regroup, as the 10-1 Rowan Profs await the Cavaliers on Tuesday at 2pm.
Sophomore Grace Marshall scored 25 points on 10-11 shooting, including 5-5 from deep, to lead six Profs with at least eight points in their 109-86 win over Eastern (4-5) in Monday's second game.
Rowan led by as many as 25 points, as it shot nearly .600 from the field on the night, draining 13-23 three point attempts.
Eastern and Arcadia will look to close the calendar year with a win, as they meet in Tuesday's first game, scheduled for 12pm at Nerney Field House.
