Women's Basketball Falls Short in OT Thriller vs. Rowan

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini women's basketball team shook off yesterday's loss and battled the Rowan Profs to overtime before falling 87-85 in the final game of the 2019 Cavalier Classic, hosted by Cabrini University.

Five Cavaliers scored in double figures today, led by freshman Katie Rodriguez, who scored a career best 18 points to go with six rebounds and three blocked shots. Junior Ashley Tutzauer nearly posted a rare double-double, recording 16 points and a career high nine steals.

Classmate Lexi Edwards added 17 points and a career high six assists, while classmate Kate Lannon added 10 points, nine boards, four assists and two blocked shots. Senior Cassidy Gallagher chipped in with a season best 12 points, six dimes and five boards.

The Blue and White (7-4) wasted little time erasing Monday's offensive struggles, connecting on its first three field goal attempts of the game. The Cavaliers would make just two more field goals over the final eight minute of the opening frame, but forced six first quarter turnovers and trailed just 15-11 after the first quarter.

The Profs built their largest lead at 17-11 early in the second quarter, but the Cavaliers had an answer. Trailing 23-20 at the 4:18 mark, Lannon hit Gallagher for a triple, sparking an 8-0 Cabrini run. Edwards' three point play gave the home side a 28-23 lead with 2:36 to play in the half.

Despite a late Rowan charge, Cabrini maintained a slim 30-29 lead at the halftime break.

Cabrini used an 8-0 run early in the third quarter to build its largest lead of the game at 38-31, but the Profs would not go away.

The Cavaliers clung to a slim lead that swung between 3-7 points for much of the stanza, but Rowan scored the final six points of the quarter. The Profs held the Cavaliers scoreless over the final 2:11 of the frame, sending the game to the fourth quarter tied at 50.

With just 10 minutes to play, both teams turned to efficient offensive attacks, combining to shoot 17-30 from the field in a final period that featured eight lead changes and six ties.

With just over two minutes to play, Tutzauer's third three of the game gave Cabrini a 67-66 lead, which would be its final advantage of the game. One minute later, a Rowan steal and bucket put the visitors ahead 69-67, but an Edwards bucket with 45 seconds left in regulation evened the score at 69.

Three Rowan foul shots sandwiched an empty offensive possession for Cabrini, allowing the Profs to build a 72-69 lead with just 16 seconds to play.

Following a Cabrini timeout, the carom from a missed jumper fell to Gallagher who found Edwards on the left wing for a game-tying three pointer with just 1.2 seconds left in regulation. The Profs failed to get a shot attempt on the ensuing possession, sending the game to overtime.

Rowan built an early advantage in the extra period, scoring the first six points before freshman Miranda Liebtag's triple put the Cavaliers on the board. Minutes later, back to back buckets pushed Rowan's lead back to six points at 83-77 with just 1:50 to play.

The Cavaliers responded with a 5-0 spurt of their own, pulling to within 83-82 with 60 seconds n the clock. The Profs responded on their next possession, before two empty Cabrini trips allowed Rowan to extend its lead to 87-82 with just three seconds to play.

The Blue and White recorded season highs with 21 offensive rebounds and eight blocked shots, while its 85 points, 10 three pointer, 22 assists and 14 steals ranked among its best performances of the season.

Like the Cavaliers, Rowan (11-1) had five players score in double figures, led by sophomore Ayanna Johnson, who paired 21 points, 17 rebounds and eight blocked shots. Freshman Eliana Santana added 23 points and nine boards.

In the day's early game, Eastern used a 13-0 run to erase a 10 point fourth quarter deficit before junior Da'Naziah Brown's short jumper gave the Eagles a 52-50 win over Arcadia. Eastern held the Knights to just six points over the game's final 6:26, as the Eagles came storming back.

Junior Minika Glenn led Eastern (5-5) with 19 points and six rebounds, while Brown finished with 10. Freshman Kay Waluh added eight points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots.

Sophomore Julia Makowski led Arcadia (8-5) with 16 points and six boards before fouling out, while senior Taylor Dunn chipped in with 13 points and team high seven boards.

The road will get no easier for the Cavaliers as No. 10 DeSales (8-2) comes calling on Saturday. Tip is slated for 1pm at Nerney Field House.
