Women's Basketball Tops #10 DeSales 69-62

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini women's basketball team overcame a six point third quarter and .217 shooting in the second half to open the decade with a 69-62 victory over No. 10 DeSales this afternoon at Nerney Field House.

Juniors Kate Lannon and Ashley Tutzauer provided the offensive spark for the Cavaliers, combining for 41 points. Lannon led the way with a season high 21 points, eight rebounds and three steals, while Tutzauer added 20 points and career best nine boards.

The Bulldogs scored the game's first bucket and the Cavaliers responded with a 14-2 run, building an early 14-5 lead midway through the first quarter.

The cushion swelled to 10 points late in the quarter, but DeSales recorded the final four points of the stanza, slicing Cabrini's lead to 21-15 after the opening 10 minute period.

The Blue and White turned to its defense to create some separation in the second quarter. The Cavaliers held the powerful DeSales offense to just .267 shooting in the frame and pressure it into eight second quarter turnovers, resulting in 11 Cabrini points.

Cabrini's defense turned to offense for the Blue and White, as the team closed the second quarter on a 15-4 run, holding DeSales to just one made field goal over the final 5:23 of the stanza.

The Cavaliers went into the halftime break with a seemingly comfortable 44-27 lead after shooting .486 from the field and dominating the glass. Cabrini owned a 25-17 first half rebound advantage, including nine offensive rebounds that resulted in 14 second chance points.

The Blue and White would need every point of its lead, as DeSales turned up its defense in the third quarter. The Cavaliers scored just six points and committed 11 of its 22 turnovers in the third quarter alone. Senior Cassidy Gallagher provided what offense the Cavaliers could muster, scoring five of her nine points in the frame, including the team's lone field goal.

While the Bulldogs looked to take advantage of Cabrini's offensive struggles, the Cavaliers continued to made the most of their defensive effort. DeSales could only cut eight points off its deficit during the period, as Cabrini held the Bulldogs to just five field goals and forced six turnovers.

DeSales cut Cabrini's lead to 50-43 in the opening minute of the fourth, but the Cavaliers responded with eight points on its next three possessions, extending the cushion to 15 with 7:18 to play.

The Bulldogs again turned to their defense, using a 12-2 spurt to pull within 60-55 after a pair of free throws at the 2:31 mark.

The Cavaliers then turned to senior Meghan Matthews, who was making her first appearance of the season. The senior scored four points on Cabrini's next two possessions, keeping the Blue and White lead at seven points with 1:46 on the clock.

Cabrini converted five of its six trips to the line in the game's final minute to ice the win.

The victory marked Cabrini's first over DeSales since a 73-55 victory on Jan. 6, 2010 and avenged last year's 71-39 road loss.

Senior Molly Jansco led the Bulldogs (8-3) with 21 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots, while sophomore Averi Jordan added 12 points.

After today's win, the Cavaliers (8-4) will turn their attention to Atlantic East Conference action, as league play will open on Wednesday. Cabrini will open its conference slate with a trip to Aston, PA to face Neumann (4-8). Tip is slated for 6pm.
