ARLINGTON, VA – The Cabrini men's basketball team closed its regular season today, suffering an 88-69 loss at Marymount University.
The loss dropped the Cavaliers to 6-19 on the season, but by virtue of its 4-8 mark in the Atlantic East Conference, the Blue and White has secured a spot in next week's conference tournament.
As the tournament's number five seed, the Blue and White will visit number four seed Wesley in Monday's first round.
Freshman
Voshon Mack led the Cavaliers tin today's action, pairing 22 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Senior
Anthony Wright-Downing added 13 points and four steals, while classmate
Alsmith Saintilus chipped in with 11 points.
The Blue and White built an early five point lead but minutes later, Marymount used a 14-0 run to build a 25-12 cushion at the 9:01 mark.
After trailing by as many as 16 points late in the first half, the Cavaliers posted the final eight points of the stanza, pulling to within 36-28 at the half.
Cabrini further cut into its deficit in the second half, trimming Marymount's lead to six points. The Saints again had an answer, using a quick 5-0 spurt to extend its lead back to double figures.
Despite shooting north of .480 in the second half, the Cavaliers could not make significant progress in eliminating their deficit, as the Saints shot nearly .700 from the field and 12-14 from the charity stripe after the break.
Xavier Reaves paired 19 points and nine rebounds off the bench for Marymount (14-11, 7-5 Atlantic East), who featured five players in double figure scoring.
Cabrini and Wesley (12-13, 6-6 Atlantic East) split its two meetings in the regular season, with each winning on its home floor. Their last meeting came just 10 days ago, as the Cavaliers suffered a 105-98 road loss.
