COLLEGEVLLE, PA – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team opened its 2019 season today with an impressive 16-6 victory at Ursinus College.
Trailing by two goals midway through the first half, the Cavaliers found their offensive rhythm, exploding for 13 unanswered goals to put the game away.
Senior
Avery Murphy paired six goals and two assists to lead the Blue and White, while etching her name in the Cabrini record book.
With tonight's eight points, Murphy became the 11th player in program history to reach the 200 career point plateau. Murphy also controlled 12 draws, caused a turnover and went 3-3 in free position shots.
Freshman
Shea Neary added five points on four goals and a helper to go with six ground balls and two caused turnovers. Classmate
Dana Carlson chipped in with three goals and a pair of draw controls in her collegiate debut.
Senior
Katie Kucia and junior
Mattie Porter anchored the defensive effort, with each notching four caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls. Freshman goaltender
Sam Hamalak recorded eight saves to score her first collegiate victory.
Murphy put the Cavaliers on the board just 33 seconds into the game, but the Bears responded with a pair of goals to jump ahead. Cabrini and Ursinus alternated goals, with Neary's first goal evening the score at 3-3 at the 19:25 mark.
Ursinus netted back to back goals to take a 5-3 lead with 11:19 to play in the first half.
Neary and Murphy scored goals in a 16 second span to even the score late in the opening stanza, before Kucia's free position goal at the 2:23 mark gave Cabrini its first lead in the game's opening minutes.
The Cavaliers removed any doubt about the game's outcome, as it held the Bears to just four shots on goal in the second half.
Meanwhile, Cabrini notched 16 shots on target. Five Cavaliers marked the scoring column in the second half, including three goals each by Murphy and Carlson, whose three tallies came in a four minute span.
Sophomore
Taylor Dimmerling and senior
Emma Rodner-Tims also marked the scoring column, as the Cabrini lead swelled to 16-5.
Senior Emily DiGiorgio paired a goal and three assists for Ursinus (0-1), while sophomores Grace Langen and Hanna Crowley scored two goals each. Senior Bridget Sherry tallied three caused turnovers, four ground balls and four draw controls, as classmate Kaitlyn France notched 11 saves in the loss.
The Cavaliers will make their Edith Robb Dixon Field debut on Thursday, when they host Bates College (0-0). The opening draw is slated for 2pm.
