ARLINGTON, VA - The Cabrini women's basketball team couldn't escape a streaking Marymount squad as they fell to the Saints by a 77-68 final in the Atlantic East Conference championship.
Despite a hot second half from the Blue and White in which they shot a scorching 64 percent from the field, the hosting Saints managed to fend off the late Cavalier rally thanks to rebounding and limiting turnovers. Marymount held a 37-28 advantage on the glass, including a 16-5 advantage in offensive rebounds, while also forcing 16 Cavalier turnovers to the Saints eight.
Sophomore
Ashley Tutzauer led all scorers and tied her career high with 21 points, including knocking down 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Classmates
Lexi Edwards and
Kate Lannon added 12 points apiece, highlighted by both tallying nine points in the second half.
Senior
Nomi Washington and junior
Meghan Matthews rounded out the Cavaliers in double figures with 10 points each. Matthews added five rebounds and three assists.
The Saints opened the game on a small 5-to-2 run, but the Blue and White quickly evened things thanks to a triple from Matthews at the 7:14 mark. Just over a minute later, Matthews again would connect from down town to put the Cavaliers up 10-9. An ensuing and-one lay in from Lannon pushed the Cabrini lead to four - tied for their largest of the game.
Following a Washington jumper from the shoulder to make it 15-11, the Saints would respond with an 8-to-3 run to take a 19-18 lead at the end of the opening stanza.
The second quarter proved key in the Saints eventual victory as they outscored the Cavs 16-7 and held the Blue and White to just two made field goals. Tutzauer was responsible for all the Cavs' second quarter points, highlighted by a three pointer to open the quarter.
A nearly eight minute Cavalier scoring drought allowed the Saints to 35-25 at the intermission.
As mentioned, the Cabrini offense found their rhythm in the second half to the tune of 64 percent shooting from the field, but nine offenseive rebounds for Marymount paved the way for eight second chance points.
Following an even third quarter, the Cavs mounted their comeback in the game's final frame. Down 69-57 with 5:02 left to play, Matthews delivered with a jumper in the paint to kick start a Cavalier run. A pair of free throws from Edwards followed by a three from Lannon cut the Saints lead to 69-64.
With just over two minutes to play and the Cavs needing a stop, Tutzauer delivered with a steal and coast to coast finish to make it a three point game. The Saints would respond, however, as a pair of free throws from Aidan Phillips ended the Cavs run and put the Saints back up by five.
An ensuing steal by Regan Lohr gave the Saints an extra possession and Katie McShea delivered with a driving layup to push the Marymount lead to seven. The Saints would manage to fend off the late rally from the Blue and White and hang on for the eventual 77-68 final.
McShea paved the way for the Saints offense as the forward finished with a team high 20 points on 8-of-13 from the field.
Today's game marked the seventh consecutive season the Blue and White played in the conference championship. The loss moves the Cavaliers record to 17-10 on the year.
