AUBURNDALE, FL - The Cabrini baseball team kicked off their spring break trip today with a pair of games against Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) and Saint Mary's University -Minnesota.
Game 1: Cabrini 6, MSOE 5
The Blue and White opened their spring break trip with a dramatic 6-5 victory against MSOE.
After trailing 5-3 entering the eighth inning, Cabrini took advantage of an error and wild pitch, in addition to two hits, to push across the tying runs and even things at eight a piece. Junior
Henry Peguero started the rally for the Cavs with a single to third and capitalized on an errant throw by the third baseman to advance to second.
Following a MSOE pitching change, senior
Tyler Norris stepped to the plate and delivered a base knock to left, moving Peguero to third in the process. A Norris steal put runners on second and third for the Cavs with one out.
Needing to put the ball in play, sophomore
Justin Henry did just that with a hard hit ball to the shortstop. Peguero broke for home on contact and beat the throw to the plate making it a 5-4 MSOE lead.
The Cavs caught a break on the ensuing batter as MSOE pitcher Tyler Gronert delivered a wild pitch, allowing Norris to score the tying run. Gronert would escape further damage as he retired the next two batters.
Following a clean top of the ninth from junior
Kyran Weemaels, the Cavalier offense went back to work looking to end things before extra innings.
Sophomore
Mack McKisson led things off with an infield single to short, while junior
Shaun Stackhouse followed suit with an infield single to third. With one out and runners on first and second, sophomore
JD Barrett took a patient approach and worked out a walk to load the bases.
Peguero, who finished with a team high three hits, recorded his biggest of the season with a rope to center for the walkoff win, handing the Cavs the 6-5 victory and their third win of the season in the process.
As mentioned, Peguero led the way offensively with a 3-5 effort, including two runs and two RBI's. McKisson and Norris both finished with two hits each, highlighted by Norris' first long ball of the season in the bottom of the sixth.
In total, seven different Cavs marked the hit column for a combined 11 hits. Weemaels picked up the victory for the Blue and White thanks to a clean 1.1 innings of relief, while
Andrew Corso earned the start. The sophomore logged 5.2 innings, allowing eight hits and four earned, while also striking out four.
Game 2: Cabrini 1, Saint Mary's 11
The Blue and White dropped their second game of the day to Saint Mary's University (Minnesota) by an 11-1 final.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after two frames thanks in large part to a grand slam from Matthew Piechowski in the second. The early 5-0 lead gave Cardinal starter James Green a cushion to work with and allowed the righty to settle in.
Green turned in a strong effort on the bump as he logged six innings of one hit ball and struck out seven of the 19 batters he faced.
Saint Mary's added four more runs in the fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth to push their lead to 11-0.
Cabrini would tack on a run in the seventh thanks to double to right center off the bat of Barrett, driving home freshman
Garrett Laraia. Laraia paced the Cavalier offense as he finished 2-3 with the only run scored. Barrett rounded out the Cavs with hits as he finished 1-3 with an RBI.
Junior
Drew Jackson was saddled with the loss as he allowed five earned in two innings of work.
Following today's games, the Blue and White move to 3-1 on the young season and will look to add to their win total tomorrow when they take on Augustana College at 10am and Hanover College at 1:30pm. Live stats for the game against Augustana can be found
