Softball Offense Struggles in Losses to Alma, Augustana

CLERMONT, FL – The Cabrini softball team could not carry the momentum from Sunday's opening day wins into Tuesday's action, as the Cavaliers dropped a pair of games.

The Blue and White evened its record at 2-2 after suffering a 1-0 loss to Alma College and falling to Augustana College 8-1.

Game 1: Alma 1, Cabrini 0
The Cavaliers fell on the short end of a pitcher's duel in the day's opener. Alma plated the game's lone run in the bottom of the first inning after three consecutive singles.

Alma's pitcher Haley Ullrich kept Cabrini off balance, as the Cavaliers mustered just two hits in the loss.

Freshmen Faith Pitsikoulis and Emily Wargo notched the two hits for the Cavaliers, while a trio also reached base via walks. Fellow rookie Grace Stairiker suffered the loss, surrendering seven hits with four strikeouts.

Game 2: Augustana 8, Cabrini 1
Cabrini's offensive struggles continued into the nightcap, as it failed to record a hit until the fourth inning.

Augustana took advantage, plating single runs in the first and second innings and a pair in the fourth.

The Cavaliers pushed a run across the plate in the fourth, as Pitsikoulis, who led the frame with a single, scored on an RBI double by sophomore Amber Seamen. Cabrini threatened later in the inning but stranded runners on second and third.

The Vikings answered with three runs on four hits in the top of the fifth, extending their lead to 7-1.

Cabrini could not muster the offense to make a late comeback, recording just one hit over the final three innings.

Sophomore Olivia Young joined Pitsikoulis and Seamen to account for the Blue and White's three hits in the loss. Classmate Casey Scheuren suffered the loss, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits, while striking out two Vikings.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday, when they face Johnson & Wales University (1-2) at 11:45am and Rose-Hulman Institute (1-3) at 4:15m.
