DOVER, DE - The Cabrini women's basketball team secured their eighth win in a row this evening following a 74-54 victory over the hosting Wesley College Wolverines.
Four Cavaliers tallied at least 15 points as junior
Meghan Matthews led the group with a game high 20 points and 12 rebounds for her first double double of the season. Matthews also tied sophomore
Kate Lannon with a game high five offensive rebounds.
Lannon, meanwhile, was one of three Cavaliers to finish with 15 points, matching classmates
Ashley Tutzauer and
Lexi Edwards. Tutzauer and Edwards pulled in seven and four rebounds, respectively, to accompany their 15 points each.
After an even opening four minutes of play that saw the score locked at 7-7, the Cavaliers caught fire following a jumper from senior
Nomi Washington. Washington's basket sparked a 14-to-3 Cavalier run to give the Blue and White the early control. Back to back triples from Tutzauer and freshman
Dani Tyrell highlighted the spurt.
Leading 22-12 at the start of the second, Lannon and Matthews combined to score the Cavaliers next eight points, while the defense kept the Wolverines at bay. The 8-to-0 run pushed the Cavs' lead to 30-12 with 7:29 left in the half. A jumper from Tutzauer four minutes later would balloon the lead to a game high 23 points, while the Cavs would eventually take a 39-21 lead at the intermission.
Wesley nearly trimmed their deficit to single digits midway through the fourth quarter following a deep three from Jameshia Baker to make it a 60-48 game, but a quick 5-to-0 run in response from the Cavaliers ended any hopes of a comeback.
Monshea Newsome-Murr and Sydney Pedersen led the Wolverines with 11 points each.
Following tonight's victory, Cabrini improves to 14-8 overall and stays perfect in Atlantic East play at 9-0. They will look to run their win streak to nine games on Saturday, February 9th when they travel to Immaculata, PA to take on the Mighty Macs. Tip off is slated for 1pm.
