Diamond Cavs Edged by Hanover in Florida Finale

AUBRUNDALE, FL - The Cabrini baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip this morning with a narrow loss to Hanover College by a 2-0 final.

The Blue and White rallied in the top of the ninth as they put runners on second and third with only one out, but Hanover reliever George Dant escaped trouble as recorded the final two batters he faced, including a strike out for the final out of the game.

Cabrini starter Drew Jackson was saddled with the tough luck loss as the junior tossed seven strong innings of one run ball, limiting the Hanover offense to just four hits, while striking out eight.

The Panthers' Zach Chapman countered Jackson for six innings and collected with win after allowing just three hits. Dent and fellow reliever Eli Copner combined for three shutout innings and five strikeouts, while allowing just three hits.

Freshman Garrett Laraia paced the Cavalier offense with a pair of hits, while sophomore's Mack Mckisson, JD Barrett and Brendan Van Belle, along with junior Henry Peguero, collected one hit a piece.

The offense had their opportunities throughout the game as they left 12 men on base, compared to Hanover's five left on base.

As mentioned, the Blue and White made a late comeback attempt in the top of the ninth. Van Belle led things off with a single to right. With one out, McKisson slugged a double to left to put runners on second and third. Dent would escape trouble, however, as he induced a pop out from Laraia and retired sophomore Andrew Corso on strikes.

Josh Meszaros collected both RBI's for the Panthers, the first coming via a double to center and the latter on a sacrifice bunt in the eighth.

Following today's game, the Cavs move to 7-3 overall and end their spring break trip with a solid 5-3 record. They will host Cairn University on Wednesday, March 6th for their home opener at Cabrini Carroll Field. First pitch is slated for 3pm.
