Men's Lacrosse Can't Overcome Slow Start in Loss at #6 York

YORK, PA - The Cabrini men's lacrosse team could not overcome its slow start, as it suffered its first loss of the season with tonight's 11-7 loss at No. 6 York College of PA.

The defeat snapped the Cavaliers season-opening seven game win streak, while the host Spartans improved to 8-1.

Junior Mike Gerzabek led the Blue and White with three goals, while classmate Tyler Kostack paired a goal and three helpers. Senior Bill Morgan also marked the scoring column twice.

Junior Tommy DeLuca marked career highs with seven caused turnovers and nine ground balls to go with an assist, while seniors Nick Vass and Sean Wagner scooped three ground balls each.

Senior goaltender Riley White suffered the loss despite making 13 saves, one of his season high.

The Cavaliers found themselves in a deep first half hole, as the club could not find its rhythm on either side of the pitch. Despite recording 17 first half shots, Cabrini could not solve York goaltender Jack Michael. The Blue and White also committed eight of its 13 turnovers and completed just 7-11 clear opportunities in teh first and second quarters.

Meanwhile, the Spartans took full advantage, scoring three goals in both the first and second quarters to carry a comfortable 6-0 lead into the halftime break.

Morgan finally put the Cavaliers on the board midway through the third period after a Kostack feed. The momentum was gone quickly, as York responded with two goals in the next 56 seconds.

Gerzabek added an unassisted tally late in the third, but again the Spartans had an answer, scoring twice in the final two minutes of the quarter, extending their lead to 10-2 with just 15 minutes to play.

Cabrini finally found its game in the final period, outshooting York 11-6, the only period in which the Blue and White attempted more shots than the host.

The increased shot attempts paid dividends on the scoreboard, as the Cavaliers rattled off five unanswered goals to pull within 10-7 on sophomore Evan Trizonis' goal with 3:09 to play.

Unfortunately, it would be the Cavaliers' final shot on goal, as York sealed the win with a final late goal.

Cabrini's 38 shots, 27 ground balls and nine caused turnovers ranked among the team's lowest outputs of the 2019 season, while its 3-21 performance at the faceoff spot marked the team's fewest faceoff wins since March 1, 2015, when it went 3-18 in a 10-9 loss at Lynchburg.

Thomas Pfeiffer anchored the Spartans' attack with three goals and four assists, while Hunter Davis and Eban Ordakowski added two goals each. Michael matched White with 13 saves in the York cage.

The road will get no easier for the Cavaliers, as they will play host to No. 1 Salisbury University (8-0) on Wednesday night.  The opening faceoff is slated for 7pm at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
