Softball Holds Off Late Swarthmore Rally

SWARTHMORE, PA – The Cabrini softball team withstood a late rally to score a 4-3 victory at Swarthmore college this afternoon. With the win, the Cavaliers evened their record at 10-10 on the season.

The Blue and White wasted little time grabbing a lead, as sophomore Olivia Young's single scored classmate Aysiah Cintron, who opened the game with a double.

Cabrini doubled its lead in the top of the fourth on a pair of two out doubles. Freshman Allison Martin doubled to center field and crossed the play on a second consecutive double by junior Alexandra Schell.

Swarthmore cut into the lead in the bottom of the frame, as an infield groundout plated the Garnet's first run.

Cabrini's lead remained 2-1 until the top of the sixth inning, when the team added two more runs. The Cavaliers took advantage of a pair of Swarthmore miscues, as freshman Emily Wargo's sacrifice fly scored Martin before a Cintron single plated Schell.

The Garnet returned to the scoring column in the bottom of the sixth with a solo run.

The Blue and White looked for an insurance run in the seventh, but, despite having two runners on with one out, the team could not push a run across the plate.

Down to its final three outs, Swarthmore looked to complete its comeback in the bottom of the seventh. A two out infield single pulled the Garnet within 4-3, but sophomore Casey Scheuren coaxed the Garnet into a game-ending ground out.

Young went 3-4 with an RBI on the afternoon, while four other Cavalier posted two base hits each.

Freshman Grace Stairiker improved to 6-5 in the pitcher's circle, after allowing just one earned run of four hits in five innings of work. Scheuren earned her first career save, surrendering two earned runs in the final two frames.

The Blue and White will return to action on Saturday, when it opens Atlantic East conference play with a doubleheader at Neumann University (11-5). First pitch is slated for 1pm in Aston, PA.
