Protesto, Baker Lift Cavs Over Penn State Abington

JENKINTOWN, PA - The Cabrini baseball team earned another nonconference victory this afternoon thanks to an 8-6 final over the hosting Penn State Abington Lions.

Freshman Jonathan Baker collected his first victory of the season following a dominant performance on the bump. The rookie allowed just four hits in 6.2 innings, while also fanning six.

Sophomore Brian Protesto backboned the offensive attack after finishing the day 3-5 with two doubles, one run scored and five RBI's.

Rookie Brandon Loner was the only other Cavalier to finish with multiple hits as the lefty went 2-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Four other Cavs marked the hit column, highlighted by Shaun Stackhouse. The junior scored three times and added his team-leading 10th stolen base of the year.

The Blue and White pushed acrosse the game's first runs in the top of the second as Loner started out the inning with a walk. An ensuing error on a Stackhouse grounder put runners on second and third with nobody out. A single through the right side off the bat of Protesto promptly cleared the bases and handed the Cavs a 2-0 lead.

The sophomore came through once again in the third inning with the bases loaded as he beat out a would be double play ball to put the Cavs up 3-0.

Cabrini would go on to add two more in the sixth to push their lead to 6-0. Following a Stackhouse walk, Protesto drove in the speedy outfielder with a double down the left field line. A single from sophomore Steven Priest put runners on the corners, when a failed pickoff attempt allowed Protesto to score from third.

The Lions would make things interesting in the bottom of the eighth, however as they struck for six runs against (three earned) against junior Ivan Varela to trim their deficit to 8-6.

Senior Tyler Ronayne would enter with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth and induce a weak flyout to end the threat. A routine ninth, including two strikeouts, from Ronayne sealed the 8-6 victory for the Blue and White.

Abington's Pat McDonald was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) in five innings of work.

Following today's contest, the Cavaliers improve to 22-6 on the year and boast an impressive 8-2 record in true road games. They'll face another road test on Saturday, April 13th when they travel to Arlington, VA for a doubleheader against Atlantic East Conference foe Marymount. First pitch of game one is slated for 2:30pm.
