Diamond Cavs Split With Saints Following Offensive Slugfest

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Cabrini baseball team was forced to split with the hosting Marymount University Saints this afternoon thanks to a walkoff homerun in extra innings in game two.

Game One: Cabrini 8, Marymount 7
The Cavaliers used a come-from-behind effort in game one, highlighed by the long ball, to steal the 8-7 victory over the hosting Marymount Saints.

The offense, which totaled a program best five home runs, was led by junior Henry Peguero. Peguero finished 2-3 on the day with a pair of long balls and three RBI's.

Sophomore Mack McKisson (2-4, 2R, 1HR, 1RBI), senior Tyler Norris (1-4, 1R, 1HR, 1RBI), and sophomore Steven Priest (2-3, 2R, 1HR, 2RBI) also tallied homers for the Cavs high powered offense. Junior Shaun Stackhouse stayed hot as he tallied two hits with a run scored and an RBI, while freshman Joey Moyer rounded out the Cavs to mark the hit column.

McKisson led things off for the Blue and White with a solo shot to right in the top of the first to quickly hand the Cavs a 1-0 lead.

The Saints would respond with four runs, highlighted by a two-run jack off the bat of Michael Wade, in the bottom half of the frame to take a 4-1 lead. Peguero would answer for Cabrini with a two-run homerun of his own in the top of the second to trim the Saints' lead to 4-3.

Marymount added one run in the third thanks to a fielders choice RBI from Mike Ferrara to push the lead back to two runs.

Priest and Peguero would again answer for the Cavaliers as the pair hit back-to-back homers in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run homer that plated Stackhouse.

The Saints rallied in their half of the fourth as they again struck for a two-run homer to retake the lead at 7-6. The Cavs' fifth and final homerun of the game came off the bat of Norris and was a deep solo shot over the left field wall. Norris' homer evened things at seven heading into the final innings.

Sophomore Drew Swire would navigate around a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth and preserve the tie heading into the seventh.

Swire's effort proved monumental as McKisson started a one out rally that would lead to the game winner. Following a walk from freshman Brandon Loner to put runners on first and second, Stackhouse roped a single up the middle to plate McKisson for the go-ahead run.

Swire allowed a one-out walk, but otherwise retired the side in short order to secure the thrilling game one victory.

Junior Andrew Corso earned the start for the Cavs and allowed seven runs, six earned, in four innings of work. Swire collected the victory after three strong innings in which he allowed just two hits and three walks.

Marymount's Connor Hall was stuck with the loss after allowing one run in 2.1 innings.

Game Two: Cabirni 3, Marymount 4
Despite the low score, game two featured plenty of drama as the Saints forced extra innings with a two run rally in the bottom of the ninth and walked it off thanks to yet another home run.

McKisson and Loner led the offensive charge as the pair each finished 2-5 with an RBI, while Moyer and sophomore Brian Protesto also notched two hits a piece. Priest (1-5, 1RBI) and junior Joe Aurite (1-5) rounded out the Cavaliers to mark the hit column.

Junior Kyran Weemaels toed the rubber for the start of game two and continued his recent hot stretch as he limited the Saints to one run on four hits over 5.2 innings. Ray Lutick was ultimately saddled with the loss following the walk off homer. The sophomore provided quality innings out of the pen, tossing 3.2 innings and allowing just two earned.

Marymount opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI single up up the middle.

Cabrini quickly answered, however, with three hits and a run in the top of the second. An RBI single from Priest plated Stackhouse following his 11th stolen base of the season.

The Cavs pushed across two more in the top of the fifth as Moyer ignighted the rally with a leadoff double. An ensuing triple down the right field line from McKisson put the Cavs up 2-1 with one out. Following a walk from Norris, Loner roped a single to right to double the Cavs lead at 3-1.

Marymount and Cabrini would combine for just three hits across the next four innings, until the Saints used a two out rally in the bottom of the ninth to tie things up at three. Back-to-back RBI singles punctuated the Saints rally.

As mentioned, the Saints would go on to win game two and split the two game series thanks to a walkoff homer from Luke Tyree.

Following today's doubleheader, the Diamond Cavs move to 23-7 overall and 9-1 in conference play. They will look to add to their win total on Wednesday, April 17th when they travel to Annville, PA to take on the Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley College. Game time is slated for 3:30pm.
