RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini softball team brought its bats today, as the Cavaliers bashed out 34 hits in its doubleheader sweep of Gwynedd Mercy at Cabrini Field.
Freshman
Kaitlyn Martin hit her first career home run in the 9-1 win in the opener, while the team erupted for a season-high 24 hits in the night cap, leading to an 18-2 win.
Game 1
The Blue and White (19-13, 5-3 Atlantic East) grabbed an early lead in the opener, as sophomore Ayshiah Cintron led off with a double, before scoring on a ground out by classmate
Olivia Young.
Martin's first career dinger led off the second inning and sparked Cabrini to four runs. Sophomore
Jess Redding and junior
Alexandra Schell recorded doubles in the frame and scored on singles by Cintron and classmate
Amber Seamen.
The Griffins pushed an unearned run across the plate in the fourth before the Cavaliers ended the game with a four run fifth inning. After a one out walk, Cabrini strung together four consecutive singles, including run scoring base knocks by Redding, Cintron and Schell.
Freshman pitcher
Grace Stairiker was the beneficiary of the offense, as the rookie allowed just two hits with three strike outs in five innings.
Cabrini posted 13 hits in the win, with Cntron's three leading the way, while Schell, Martin and Redding added two each. Schell and Cintron combined for five RB, while Cintron, Martin and Redding scored two runs each.
Game 2
The Cavaliers carried their offensive momentum into the second game. The home squad wasted little time getting on the board, plating three runs on four hits in the first.
An early double steal put two runners in scoring position before RBI singles by Young and fellow sophomore
Amber Seamen, who later scored on a single by classmate
Casey Scheuren.
Cabrini came back for more in the second, as Schell and Young drove in runs before Seamen's third home run of the season pushed the lead to 7-0.
Gwynedd Mercy scored both of its runs in the third, but it did not deter the Blue and White offense. Senior
Darian Caputo scored on a wild pitch before a Young two RBI double pushed the lead to 10-2. Freshman
Emily Wargo and Schell then drove in runs, as Cabrini's cushion swelled to 12-2 after three innings.
The Blue and White loaded the bases with one out in the fourth and notched six consecutive singles to put the game away with a six run inning.
Ten Cavaliers recorded at least one hit in the win, while eight accounted for at least one RBI. Freshman
Kadirah Williams, Seamen, Wargo and Caputo posted three hits each, while Young drove in four runs, one more than Seamen and Scheuren.
Cabrini's offense made Scheuren's work in the pitcher's circle less taxing, as the sophomore allowed just four base hits in the win.
The Cavaliers will hit the road on Tuesday for their Atlantic East Conference finale. Cabrini will visit Immaculata (22-8-2, 4-2 Atlantic East) with a chance to secure the number two seed in the upcoming conference tournament. First pitch of the double header is scheduled for 3pm.
