Women's Lacrosse Upset Bid Falls Short vs. No. 18 Scranton

RADNOR, PA – The Cavaliers trailed No. 18 University of Scranton 15-12 with just 10:36 to play, but junior Lauren Hughes and freshman Dana Carlson combined for score three goals in 132 seconds to event the score with 7:44 on the clock.

The Royals regained the lead at 16-15 with 5:53 to go, but the Cavaliers looked to mount one final comeback attempt.

The Blue and White recorded six of its 52 shots in the final six minutes including two shots in the final minute, but neither found the mark, as the Cavaliers fell to the visiting Royals 16-15 at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

The nonconference loss dropped the Blue and White to 8-8 on the season and marked its second one goal loss to a top 20 ranked team.

Freshman Sam Hamalak kept the Cavaliers close, as the rookie recorded a season high 17 saves.

Senior Avery Murphy stuffed the stat sheet with a game-high six goals, 12 draw controls and three caused turnovers.  Hughes and Carlson joined sophomore Taylor Dimmerling with two goals each.

The Royals built an early lead, the Blue and White rallied after trailing 6-3. Murphy scored three unanswered goals to even the score at 6-6 before Carlson and Dimmerling tallied back to back goals to give Cabrini its first lead of the day at 8-7 in the final minute of the first half.,

The lead was short lived, as Scranton senior Kaitlyn Murphy evened the score with 33 seconds left in the period.

The visitors tallied six of the first eight goals in the second half to take a game-high 14-10 lead with 13:30 to play.

Cabrini did not fret, as it responded with a run of its own. Murphy notched a woman-down goal before senior Katie Kucia marked the scoring column. Following a Scranton goal, Hughes and Carlson found the back of the net to even the score at 15 with 7:44 to play.

The Cavaliers outshot the Royals 52-44, the team's second highest output of the season. Cabrini's six free position goals, 15 free position attempts and 15 turnovers also ranked among the team's best performances of the season.

Sophomore Jill Henson led the Royals (14-2) with six goals, while freshman Halle Conklin added eight draw controls and six ground balls. Senior goaltender Lauren Devlin posted 16 save sin the victory.

The Cavaliers will close their regular season on Thursday as they host Immaculata University (6-9, 2-3 Atlantic East). Game time is slated for 4pm at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
