Diamond Cavs Rally For Doubleheader Sweep of Rival Knights

RADNOR, PA  - The Cavalier baseball team broke out the broom for today's doubleheader sweep of Atlantic East Conference (AEC) foe Neumann University at Cabrini Carroll Field.

Game One: Cabrini 7, Neumann 6
The Blue and White rallied in the bottom of the seventh to secure a 7-6 walkoff victory over the Knights in game one of the two game series.

Shortstop Steven Priest delivered the game winner by way of a two out double to left center. The sophomore finished the game 2-4 with a triple and two RBI's. Classmate Mack McKisson tallied a game high three hits, while also driving home two and scoring a run.

In total, eight different Cavaliers marked the hit column and six different Cavs scored a run. Freshman Joey Moyer scored a team best two runs as he finished 1-3 with an RBI.

Andrew Corso turned in a strong performance on the bump as the junior tossed six strong innings and allowed three earned runs. He scattered six hits and struck out four. Sophomore Ray Lutick was credited with the victory after tossing a perfect seventh inning.

Cabrini pushed across the game's first runs as they took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, courtesy of an RBI double from McKisson to plate Moyer.

The Knights would answer in their half of the third, however, as the visitors struck for three runs, highlighted by back-to-back RBI singles.

Senior Tyler Norris and the Cavalier offense would even things back at three in the bottom of the third. McKisson started the two out rally with a seeing-eye single to second for the infield hit. Norris followed with a double to the left center field gap to plate McKisson and make it a 3-2 game. Brandon Loner capped the scoring with a bit of luck as the freshman rolled over on a ball to the first baseman, but the ball was booted, which allowed Norris to score from second.

The Cavs would add two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI double from Moyer and Priest's aforementioned RBI triple.

Facing a 6-3 deficit and down to their final three outs, the Knights mounted a late rally against Cabrini reliever Tyler Ronayne. A leadoff single and two walks quickly loaded the bases with nobody out. Neumann's Dan Padilla roped a two RBI single down the right field line to chase Ronayne and cut the Cavs lead to 6-5. Neumann would eventually tie things up thanks to a sac fly from Curt Yenchik.

As mentioned, the Blue and White would rally for the walkoff in the bottom of the seventh to seal the game one victory. A one out infield single from junior Chris Santana set up Priest for his previously mentioned game winning double.

Neumann's Jared Morris (1.2IP, 3H, 1ER, 1K) was ultimately saddled with the loss following the Cavs comeback.

Game Two: Cabrini 4, Neumann 2
The Cavs earned the sweep in game two thanks to a stout pitching performance from Kyran Weemaels. The junior logged his first complete game, as well as collected his third win of the season, after scattering seven hits and allowing two earned. He issued just one free pass, while striking out six. His complete game effort actually raised his ERA to a team leading 1.82 on the year.

Weemaels was opposed by Neumann's Nick Glebocki who also went the distance, but in a losing effort. Glebocki allowed 10 hits and four earned to collect the loss.

The offense was paced by Loner who did serious damage in the late innings to lift the Cavs to the victory. The first baseman finished the game 3-4 with a pair of home runs, four RBI's and two runs scored. Seven additional Cavaliers marked the hit column in game two, highlighted by McKisson, Van Belle and junior Joe Aurite. Van Belle and Aurite each roped a double, while McKisson added a triple.

The Knights opened game two with a pair of runs in the top of the first as John Lindeborn and Dan Padilla each connected for RBI singles.

Weemaels found his groove following the opening inning as the righty settled in and allowed just three hits through the next eight frames.

Loner and the rest of the Cavaliers offense provided all the run support their starter would need in the sixth and seventh innings. A leadoff homer from Loner in the sixth served as a precursor to his game clinching three run bomb in the seventh. McKisson started the seventh inning rally with a two out triple over the center fielders head, while Norris following with a hit-by-pitch. Loner's slam turned the Cavs' one run deficit into a two run lead with one swing of the bat.

Weemaels would close things out with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth to clinch the Cavs doublerheader sweep.

Following today's double dip, the Diamond Cavs improve to 19-6 overall and 8-0 in AEC play. They need just one more victory to match last season's total of 20 with 12 games remaining. They will look to keep things rolling when they travel to Cairn University to take on the Highlanders for a nonconference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 9th. First pitch is slated for 1pm.
