LANGHORNE, PA - The Cabrini baseball team secured their 20th and 21st victory this afternoon following a double header sweep of the hosting Cairn University Highlanders.
Game One: Cabrini 8, Cairn 3
The Blue and White picked up an 8-3 victory in game one of today's double dip thanks to an 8-3 final.
Sophomore
Mack McKisson paced the offense as he finished 3-3 at the dish, including two doubles, with a pair of runs and RBI's.
Seven other Cavs marked the hit column with exactly one knock a piece, but junior
Shaun Stackhouse highlighted the bunch thanks to a two RBI single in the first and a sac fly in the seventh. He also added a stolen base.
Senior
Tyler Norris, sophomore
Steven Priest and junior
Joe Aurite also drove in one run each.
Corey Hunt earned the start for the Blue and White and tossed five innings of three run ball, although only one was earned. The sophomore scattered six hits and struck out three en route to his third victory of the season.
As mentioned, Stackhouse handed the Cavs the early lead in the top of the first following a two RBI single. The Highlanders quickly responded as they evened things at 2-2 in the bottom half of the frame.
Aurite and McKisson would put the Diamond Cavs up 5-2 in the fourth thanks to an RBI single and two RBI single, respecitvely.
Cairn would inch closer and trim their deficit to 5-3 in the botom of the sixth thanks to a Cavalier error.
Norris, Stackhouse and Priest handed the Cavaliers some insurance as each tallied an RBI in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 8-3. Sophomore
Drew Swire, who entered in the sixth, worked around a leadoff hit batter to retire the Highlanders in short order and collect his first save of the season.
Game Two: Cabrini 11, Cairn 7
The nightcap of the doubleheader featured more offensive fireworks for the Cavaliers as they tallied 11 runs on just eight hits, highlighted by Aurite's third long ball of the season.
The junior finished 1-3 with a run scored and a pair of RBI's. Stackhouse led his squad with three RBI's to push his total to six on the day, while also swiping two more bases. The speedy outfielder now leads the Cavs with nine steals on the year.
Sophomore's
Brendan Van Belle and
Brian Protesto rounded out the Cavs with multi-hit games as they each finished 2-3 with two runs and two RBI's.
Sophomore
Ray Lutick toed the rubber in game two, but was forced to exit early as the Highlanders struck for five runs in 3.2 innings. Juinor
Mike Gama came on in relief and collected the win after 2.1 innings and two earned runs. He allowed just a pair of hits and struck out six of the nine batters he faced.
Similar to game one, the Blue and White struck first as they pushed across three runs in the top of the fourth. A bases loaded walk from freshman
Brandon Loner plated the Cavs first run of the inning. Stackhouse quickly followed with an RBI single to center to push the lead to 2-0. A sac fly from Protesto capped the fourth inning run for the Cavs.
Cairn put up a crooked frame in their half of the inning as they plated five runs, three of which came via the long ball.
Stackhouse and the Cavs responded in the fifth, however as Van Belle started the one out rally with a double to left center. A single to right center followed from McKisson to put runners on the corners. Norris loaded the bases following a hit by pitch, while Stackhouse delivered the big blow and promptly unloaded the bases with a single and a bit of luck. Stackhouse's single was magnified following an error on the Highlanders' left fielder.
Both teams would strike for a pair of runs in the sixth to push the score to 8-7 in favor of the Cavs. Aurite's two run jack in the top of the seventh provided Cabrini all the insurance they would need as senior
Tyler Ronayne would close the door with a clean bottom of the seventh.
As mentioned, the Cavaliers improve to 21-6 overall and 8-0 in AEC play following today's double header. The 21 wins also stands as a new program high mark; the Cavs secured their 20th and final win of 2018 on May 5th.
The Blue and White will look to run their win streak to five games when they travel to Abington, PA to take on PSU Abington on Wednesday, April 10th. Game time is slated for 3:30pm.
