What's At Stake?
For the third consecutive season, Cabrini and Marywood will meet in the conference championship game. The winner will earn the first ever Atlantic East Conference women's lacrosse title. A victory would mark the eighth in a row for the Blue and White and 18th overall, while the Pacers would wear the conference crown for the first time in five chances.
The Cavaliers have scored victories in each of the teams' three previous meetings championship, including a thrilling come from behind 20-14 win in the 2018 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) championship game.
The Pacers grabbed an early lead and used a 4-0 spurt late in the first half to build a 9-4 cushion with 11 minutes left in the first half. Still trailing by five goals with just over three minutes until the break, the Cavaliers began their comeback.
Cabrini scored the final three goals of the first half and the first in the second stanza t pull within 11-10. Minutes later,
Liz Hoeffner took over, scoring seven goals in a 9-0 run that gave the Blue and White a commanding 19-12 lead with 9:27 to play.
Hoeffner claimed MVP honors with eight goals, while senior
Avery Murphy paired six goals and 12 draw controls. Classmate
Emma Rodner-Tims chipped in with three goals, with junior
Lauren Hughes dishing out three assists. Senior goaltender
Devon Scharf posted 11 stops in the win.
Sam Bussinelli led the Pacers with four goals, while Erin Healy, junior Gwyneth Gleason and Caitlin Watson tallying four points each, with Gleason adding five draw controls and three ground balls. Junior goaltender Mary Leahy matched Scharf with 11 saves in the loss.
Last Meeting: Marywood 15, Cabrini 14 (4/3/2019, Radnor, PA)
The Pacers emerged with the final blow in an exciting, back and forth rematch, scoring a victory that snapped Cabrini's 58 game conference win streak.
Freshman
Shea Neary gave Cabrini an 8-5 lead, its largest of the night, with6:04 left in the first half. Less than two minutes into the second half, junior Zoe Simeone tied the score at 8-8. Both teams alternated games, as the scoreboard was deadlocked at nine, 10, 11 and 12.
Sophomore
Ashley Tutzauer broke the tie, scoring the first of two consecutive woman-up goals, putting the Blue and White ahead 14-12 with at the 8:49 mark. The Pacers responded with back to back goals, as Simeone evened the score at 14 with 6:58 to play. Junior Molly Yelenics broke the tie with the game-winning free position goal with 2:58 to play.
Cabrini had its chances to record goals in the game's final minutes, as it attempted six of its 43 shots in the final 6:19, just one was on target with two hitting the posts.
The Cavaliers outshot the Pacers 43-32 on the night, and were plus seven in ground balls (23-16) and plus four in draw controls (17-13), but it was the free position shots,
where the Blue and White fell short. Marywood converted nine of its 17 chances, including 5-11 in the second half, while Cabrini converted just 4-14.
Tutzauer provided much of the offense for the Blue and White, scoring four goals to go with four draw controls and two caused turnovers. Freshman
Shea Neary added three goals and five draw controls, while classmate
Dana Carlson scored twice.
Sophomore
Taylor Dimmerling caused three turnovers, one more than classmate
Sarah McCarron, while senior
Avery Murphy chipped in with five draw controls and four ground balls. Freshman goaltender
Sam Hamalak recorded 12 saves in the loss.
Simeone led Marywood with five goals, while Yelencsics added three. Gleason stuffed the stat sheet with two goals, seven draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Leahy earned the victory after recording nine saves.
Cabrini Last Time Out: Cabrini 17, Marymount 10 (5/1/2019, Radnor, PA)
The Cavaliers got off to a good start in Wednesday's seminal game, scoring three goals in the opening 90 seconds of the game, and pushed their lead to 6-1 midway through the first half. The Blue and White carried its five goal cushion into the halftime break, as Murphy scored in the final seconds of the first half.
The scoring run continued into the second half, as Cabrini netted four of the first five goals of the second half, as two consecutive Rodner-Tims markers put the Cavaliers ahead 14-6 midway through the stanza. The Saint responded with four unanswered goals of its own, but the home team put an end to the rally with the final three tallies of the night.
Tutzauer tallied four goals, two assists, six ground balls, five caused turnovers and a pair of draw controls, surpassing the 100 career point plateau. Murphy stuffed the stat sheet with seven points on five goals and two helpers, seven draw controls, seven ground balls and seven caused turnovers.
Neary paired a goal and an assist with five caused turnovers and four ground balls, while junior
Mattie Porter forced three miscues and scooped four ground balls. Hamalak earned the victory with eight saves.
The Cavaliers outshot the Saints 45-24 and scooped 40 ground balls to just 18 for Marymount. Cabrini also pressured the visitors into 32 turnovers and surrendered just 12 free position shots.
Marywood Last Time Out: Marywood 18, Neumann 8 (5/1/2019, Scranton, PA)
The Pacers punched their ticket to Saturday's championship game with a convincing semifinal victory of the number four see Neumann. The Pacers scored the game's first eight goals and never looked back.
Despite outshooting the Knights just 18-11 in the first half, the Pacers made the most of their chances, establishing a 12-3 lead at the half.
Simeone scored a game-high six goals and scooped seven ground balls, while Gleason added four goals, two assists and five draw controls. Leahy scored the victory with six saves.
