#6 Cavaliers Advance with 15-4 Victory over DeSales

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's lacrosse team secured its spot in the third round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament today, with a 15-4 victory over DeSales University at Edith Robb Dixon Field.  

The No. 6 Cavaliers will face Springfield College in Saturday's third round, after the Pride upset No. 8 Ursinus 16-15 in overtime. Game location and time have not yet been announced.

With today's win, the Blue and White improved to 18-2 on the season, setting a new mark for program's wins in a season. The previous mark of 17 was tied in 2008, 2012, 2014, 2017 and 2018.

The Cavaliers displayed a balanced attack that saw seven players mark the scoring column. Sophomore Kyle Tucker led the way, matching a career high with five goals. Senior Jordan Krug added four goals and five ground balls.

Junior Kevin Leyden added two goals, while seniors Bill Morgan and Nicholas Waligurski joined juniors Tyler Kostack and Mike Gerzabek with one goal each.

The Blue and White sparked its offense by controlling the faceoff X. Sophomore Luke McCallion won 12 of his 18 chances, while freshman Jake Huey went 4-4.

Cabrini's defensive unit continued its stifling play, holding the Bulldogs to just 15 shots on goal. Senior goaltender Riley White secured his 18th victory with 11 saves, while senior Sean Wagner and junior Tommy Deluca combined for seven caused turnovers and six ground balls.  

Junior Kyle Myers scooped a game-high six ground balls, while sophomore Corey Carver matched Krug with five, one more than junior Robert Cressman.

After a slow start, the Cavaliers found their offensive rhythm midway through the opening stanza, as freshman Jake Goss hit Tucker for the game's first goal. The Blue and White added five more goals in a four minute span to build a 6-0 lead after the first quarter.

Morgan's goal early in the second pushed the lead to 7-0 before sophomore Zach Bowen and senior Joe Neggia put the Bulldogs on the board. Trailing 8-2 with 3:27 to play, a two minute non-releasable penalty gave DeSales a chance to creep back into the game.

The Cavaliers fought off the penalty before Krug tallied an unassisted goal with just under one second remaining in the half, sending Cabrini into the break with a 9-2 lead.

Tucker and Leyden notched the only two goals in the third, before Krug opened the fourth with his third tally of the night, extending Cabrini's cushion to 12-2 with 11:19 to play.

Bowen and Neggia combined for four points and three goals for DeSales (17-2) who was making its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Junior Frank Krug and freshman Ben Parente caused two turnovers each, while senior goaltender Matt Barry posted 15 saves.

Springfield (11-9) advanced to Saturday's third round with a thrilling come from behind win at Ursinus.

The Bears scored the first six goals of the contest and looked to cruise to the win. Trailing 14-11 with 11 minutes to play, Springfield rattled five unanswered goals. Zachary Schuette's gave the Pride its first lead of the day at 15-14 with 2:44 to play.

Ursinus took advantage of a late penalty, as Ben Minardi evened the score with a man-up goal at the 1:17 mark. Springfield had to shots to win in the final 10 seconds but Ursinus goaltender Nick Kirk was up to the task, sending the game to overtime.

Ursinus won the overtime faceoff, but an uncaused turnover game the ball to the Pride, who didn't waste much time. Before Cameron Glover scored the game-winner, his third goal of the game.

Scheutte and Cole Pecora added three goals each for the Pride. Jack Vail and Lucas Habich tallied two markers. Joseph Cameron went 14-31 at the faceoff spot with 13 ground balls, while Cole Finerty secured 10 saves in the victory.

Saturday will mark the second time the Cavaliers have hosted the Pride in the NCAA Tournament, as Cabrini scored a 20-8 win over Springfield in the first round of the 2013 tournament.
