RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini women's soccer team opened their season on a high note this afternoon as they rallied for a late goal to steal a 1-0 victory over the visiting Bryn Mawr College Owls.
It was a tale of two halves for the Cavaliers as they controlled the play in the opening stanza. The Blue and White out shot the Owls 9-2, including a 4-0 advantage in shots on goal, and tallied a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The second half, not including the final three minutes, belonged to Bryn Mawr thanks to an 11-5 advantage in shots and a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. Cabrini, however, tallied the games only goal in the closing minutes of regulation thanks to goal off the foot of senior
Diana VanSickle with 2:18 seconds left.
Classmate
Katelyn Gilinger played a key role in VanSickle's strike as she applied pressure to Owls' keeper Grecia Prieto, forcing an errant pass for VanSickle to corral.
VanSickle paced the Cavs with three shots on the afternoon, including two on goal, while juniors
Maria Hagan and Alex Garces, along with senior
Marissa Portelli tallied two shots each.
Junior
Ashley Tutzauer provided a slew of clutch saves to anchor the Cavs defensive unit, highlighted by a diving stop with just over 15 minutes to play off a Bryn Mawr free quick taken from just outside the 18 yard box. In total, the junior capped her night with four saves.
Overall, the Cavs out shot the Owls by a slim 14-13 margin, including a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Bryn Mawr's Emily Elmore led the visitors with six shots, three of which landed on goal, while Laura Burckhardt tallied three shots.
Following today's action, Cabrini improves to 1-0 on the season and will look to double their win total when they next host rival Eastern University in the Battle of Eagle Road. Game time is slated for 7pm at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
