RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini women's soccer team used a pair of second half goals to seal a victory over rival Eastern University in the annual Battle of Eagle Road.
Juniors Alex Garces and
Maria Hagan marked the scoring column for the Blue and White, both netting their first goals of the season, in the 45th and 55th minute, respectively.
Junior goalkeeper
Ashley Tutzauer notched her second shutout in as many games after facing seven shots and collecting three saves. Tutzauer secured three shutouts in 17 games last season.
The Cavaliers controlled the pace early as they tallied five shots in the first 20 minutes of play and nearly took the lead off a shot from sophomore
Brittany Purdy in the 30th minute. Purdy found open space in the left side of the box and delivered a strike to the lower left corner, but an Eagles' defender blocked the shot to preserve the tie heading into the intermission.
Cabrini would ultimately find pay dirt less than a minute out of the break, however, as Garces was on the receiving end of a throw in from sophomore
Brianna Blair. Senior
Maddy Wojton had a perfect touch off the throw in to redirect the ball for Garces.
The Cavs doubled their lead 10 minutes later thanks to an unassisted strike from Hagan on the right side from just inside the 18.
The Cavalier defense allowed just two shots on goal the rest of the way to help preserve the shutout. In total, the Blue and White out shot the Eagles 17-7, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal, while both teams tallied six corners.
Following tonight's victory, Cabrini improves to 2-0 on the season and earns their first victory over the Eagles since a 1-0 triumph on November 4th, 2003. The Blue and White will look to stay perfect on Saturday, September 7th when they host Rosemont College at 7pm.
