Men's Soccer Can't Overcome Halftime Deficit in 2-1 Loss

RADNOR, PA – Despite outshooting the visiting Devils 14-3 in the second half and recording nine second period corner kicks, the Cabrini men's soccer team could not overcome its 2-0 halftime deficit, as the Blue and White suffered a 2-1 loss to FDU-Florham today at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

The Devils (5-2-1) opened the scoring in the 14th minute, when freshman Oliver Trujillo found junior Caleb Aryiku for a one-touch shot from just outside the penalty area.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 32nd minute, as sophomore Salvatore Vassallo's throw-in from the deep right side bounced through Cabrini's penalty area, finding junior Ricky La Stella for a 2-0 lead.

The Blue and White found its offensive rhythm in the second half and it showed on the scoreboard in the 51st minute. Senior Kostas Slikas connected with freshman Tyler Tomlin for the rookie's third goal in the last two matches.

The Cavaliers (3-6-1) kept the pressure on the FDU-Florham defense, outshooting the visitors 14-3 and forcing nine second half corner kicks.

Despite its ball control, Cabrini could not find its way back into the score column before the final horn blew.

Cabrini's 14 corner kicks marked a season-high and the most the team has attempted since forcing 15 in a 3-1 win over Rosemont on Oct. 1, 2013, a string of 123 matches.

The Cavaliers' 19 shots also marked the team's second highest number of the season. Tomlin led the Blue and White with four shots, one more than senior Andre Justin.

Junior goaltender Anthony Zampirri notched seven saves in the loss.

Today also marked the program's annual Alumni Day. The men's soccer alums opened today's action at Edith Robb Dixon Field. The alums played a spirited scrimmage with north of 30 participants. The group again took center stage during halftime, as Cabrini honored its championship winning teams from the last 30 years.

Cabrini will return to the pitch on Wednesday, when they visit Alvernia University (1-8-2). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm in Reading, PA.
