RADNOR, PA – The Cavaliers erased a 12 point deficit in the game's final six minutes to even the score 84 seconds to play, but could not pull ahead, as the Cabrini men's basketball team suffered a tough 90-86 loss to the Marymount Saints today at Nerney Field House.
Senior
Keith Blassingale led the Blue and White (3-11, 0-2 Atlantic East) with 24 points, five rebounds and five steals. Sophomore
Voshon Mack tallied a double-double, pairing 23 points, including 17 in the second half, with 10 rebounds.
Freshman
Jordan Brown added a career best 12 points and five assists, while junior
Billy Warren chipped in with eight points and five boards.
Both teams battled back and forth in the opening 10 minutes of the first half, but trailing 22-18, the Saints used a 12-1 spurt to establish a 30-23 lead with just under five minutes left in the first half.
The Cavaliers continued to fight, keeping Marymount within arm's reach, as a late Mack bucket cut Cabrini's deficit to 38-34 at the half.
Marymount opened the second half with a 9-3 run, extending its cushion to 47-37 at the 16:49 mark. The Blue and White, however, would not go away
Cabrini's deficit swung between 4-9 points for much of the second half before swelling to 75-63 after a pair of free throws by Marymount senior Ryan Albert with 5:53 left on the clock.
The Cavaliers responded with a 7-0 run of their own, as a corner three by junior
DJ Smith sliced the deficit to five with five minutes left.
Back to back threes from Brown and Blassingale further cut into Marymount's lead before Mack convert bucket on three straight possessions to even the score at 82 with 1:24 left on the clock.
A pair of Marymount baskets sandwiched an empty trip for the Cavaliers, as the Saints pushed their lead to 86-82 with just 19 seconds to play.
Despite converted jumpers from Blassingale and Brown in the game's final minutes, the Cavaliers could not pull ahead, as Marymount senior Taiga Walker went 4-4 from the free throw line in the final 10 seconds.
The Cavaliers won the battle in the paint, outscoring the Saints 52-46 in the lane and converting 13 second chance points. Cabrini also shot .541, made 33 field goals and recorded 10 steals, each among the team's best performances of the season.
Sophomore Xavier Reaves led the Saints (8-7, 1-1 Atlantic East) with 27 points and 14 rebounds, while Albert finished with 15 points, two more than Walker.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday, when they play host to reigning Atlantic East Conference champion Gwynedd Mercy (10-4, 1-0 Atlantic East). Game time is set for 8pm at Nerney Field House.
