RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team collected their fourth consecutive victory this evening following a comfortable 104-77 final over the visiting Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins.
Head coach
Kate Pearson also collected her 200th career victory following today's contest as she joins elite company as just the second coach in program history to reach the 200 win plateau. To date, Pearson has compiled a record of 200-94 and owns the second highest winning percentage in school history (.680).
Junior
Lexi Edwards paced the Cavalier offense with a game high 22 points in just 26 minutes. She added eight rebounds and three steals to round out her performance. Classmate
Ashley Tutzauer chipped in 19 points and nine rebounds, while junior
Kate Lannon and senior
Meghan Matthews tallied 12 points each. Matthews also secured her first double double of the season after hauling in a game high 14 rebounds. Sophomore
Kirsten Searcy and freshman
Miranda Liebtag rounded out the Cavs in double figures with 10 points a piece.
After a tightly contested opening seven minutes with the score knotted at 15 all, the Blue and White opened up a bit of breathing room thanks to an ensuing 10-0 run, highlighted by a pair of back-to-back fastbreak layups from Tutzauer. The Griffins' Jill Kane briefly ended the run thanks to a triple from the top of the arc, but a pair of free throws from Matthews and a mid range jumper from Searcy closed the quarter with the Cavs leading 29-18.
The Griffins would keep things close the remainder of the first half as they Cavs carried a 51-37 advantage into the intermission.
A three ball from Edwards to open the second half served as a tone setter for the Blue and White as they rattled off a 16-1 run to push their lead to 30 points with 40 seconds remaining in the third quarter. In total, six different Cavaliers contributed to the momentum swinging run including sophomore
Dani Tyrell and rookie
Sydney Kesselman.
Cabrini would eventually balloon their lead to a game high 33 points with just over eight minutes remaining in the game following a layup from sophomore Abigail Fricke.
Gwynedd's Tolu Omole led the Griffins with 13 points and five assists, while Kelly Owens added 12 points in just 13 minutes of action.
The Cavalier defense again flexed their muscles as they limited the visiting Griffins to just 24.7 percent from the field, including 22.6 percent from beyond the arc, while forcing 16 turnovers. The Cavs also grabbed a season best 76 rebounds, nearly doubling their season average entering the night.
Following tonight's game, the Cavaliers improve to 11-4 overall and 3-0 in Atlantic East Conference play. They will aim to stay hot when they next travel to Staten Island, NY to face the College of Staten Island. Tip off is slated for 5:30pm.
