Cavaliers' Offense Explodes for 116 Points in Win over Valley Forge

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's basketball team found its offensive rhythm early, as it rolled to a 116-101 victory over the University of Valley Forge tonight at Nerney Field House.

Cabrini's (5-13, 1-4 Atlantic East) 116 points marked the team's highest offensive output since topping Widener 111-99 on Nov. 30, 2013.

Junior Justin Gans led an attack that featured three players topping 20 points. The junior, who was honored before tipoff after recently surpassing the 1,000 career point plateau, scored a season best 36 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Senior Keith Blassingale paired 26 points and seven boards, while junior DJ Smith drained five three pointers en route to 20 points.

Holding a slim 13-11 lead just under five minutes after the opening whistle, the Cavaliers blew the game open with a 12-0 run. A Blassingale triple pushed the Blue and White cushion to 25-11 at the 12:40 mark.

The Cavaliers extended their lead to 21 points in the final seconds of the half on a fast break lay-in by freshman Jordan Brown.

Cabrini carried a comfortable 69-50 lead into the halftime break after shooting .565 from the field in the opening 20 minutes of action.

The Blue and White dominated the stat sheet in the first half, owning a 25-13 rebound advantage, including nine offensive rebounds t haled to 16 second chance points. Cabrini also turned eight Valley Forge turnovers into 15 points and outscored the visitors 34-16 in the paint.

Cabrini's lead swung between 14-19 points for much of the second half, but midway through the period, the Patriots made a run. An 8-0 run sliced the Blue and White advantage to 97-86 with just under eight minutes to play, but the visitors could not come within 10 points of the Cavaliers over the game's final minutes.

The Cavaliers set several season highs in today's win, including 42 made field goals, 15 made three pointers, a .895 free throw percentage and 29 assists. The club's +16 assist/turnover ratio also marked the team's largest since matching the mark on Feb. 17, 2018 against Clarks Summit.

Brown added to the offense with 12 points and a season high seven assists, while junior Billy Warren and sophomore Ryan Byars combined for 11 points, 16 rebounds and eight dimes.

Freshman Matthew Altamirano had a monster night for Valley Forge (9-7) in a losing effort, scoring 37 points to lead five Patriots in double figure scoring. Sophomore Steven Eng added 17 points off the bench before fouling out.

The Cavaliers will return to Atlantic East Conference action on Wednesday, when they pay a visit to Immaculata University (6-11, 2-3 Atlantic East). Tip is slated for 8pm in Immaculata, PA, following the women's game against the Mighty Macs.
