Men's Basketball Scores OT Win at Immaculata

IMMACULATA, PA – The Cavaliers erased a four point deficit in overtime and claimed the final of the game's 22 lead changes with just 60 seconds to play, as the Cabrini men's basketball team rallied for an 87-86 overtime victory at Immaculata University.

The Mighty Macs scored the first two buckets in the extra period, building a 79-75 lead before the Blue and White evened the score at 80 and 82.

Tyler Tillery's jumper put the home side ahead 84-82 with 1:50 to play, but junior Ryan Byars converted a three point play on Cabrini's next possession to put the Cavaliers back in front with 1:41 on the clock.

Immaculata's Brandon McCullough responded with a jumper in the paint on the ensuing possession, but the Blue and White would have an answer of its own, as senior Keith Blassingale drained a short jumper to put the Cavaliers ahead 87-86 with 60 seconds to play.

Both teams came up empty on their next possessions, as a defensive rebound game Immaculata the ball with nine ticks on the clock. Following a Mighty Mac timeout, the Cavaliers made one final defensive stand, forcing a missed three pointer at the buzzer to secure the win.

Four Cavaliers (6-13, 2-4 Atlantic East) scored north of 14 points in the win, led by junior Justin Gans' 21 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Classmate DJ Smith added 20 points off the bench, matching a season high with six made three pointers.

Blassingale and Byars added 14 points each and combined for nine boards.

Despite exchanging the lead several times in the opening minutes, the Mighty Mac controlled the score board for much of the first half. The score remained within a handful of points until the final minutes of the stanza when six quick points pushed the Immaculata lead to 40-31 with 1:39 to play.

The Cavaliers responded with back to back buckets, as a Smith fast break lay-up cut the Blue and White deficit to 40-35 at the half.

The game remained tight in the second half, with Immaculata clinging to its slim lead until Blassingale's triple put Cabrini ahead 52-51 at the 13:30 mark, the visitor's first lead since 15-14.

Cabrini pushed its lead to eight points on another Smith three with 7:25 on the clock. Minutes later, the Mighty Macs made their comeback. Immaculata used a 10-2 run to even the score at 73 with just under two minutes left in regulation.

Byars found his way to the cup for the lead on Cabrini's next possession, but a Blue and White foul the next time down the floor allowed Immaculata's Jordan Ambrose to tie the score from the charity stripe with 85 seconds to play.

Both teams had chances to regain the lead in the final minute of regulation, but Cabrini missed three shots, while the Mighty Macs committed a pair of turnovers to send the game into overtime.

McCullough led Immaculata (6-12, 2-4 Atlantic East) with 29 points, while Ambrose added 17 in the losing effort.

Cabrini will put its three game win streak on the line on Saturday, as it welcomes Neumann (8-11, 2-4 Atlantic East) to Nerney Field House. The game is slated to tip at 3pm, following the 1pm women's tilt.
