IMMACULATA, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team collected their third consecutive victory this evening following a 64-56 final over the hosting Immaculata University Mighty Macs.
Offensively, the Cavs were led by senior
Meghan Matthews who totaled a game high 18 points in just 20 minutes of action. Junior
Ashley Tutzauer added 13 points and six rebounds, while classmates
Kate Lannon and
Lexi Edwards chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively.
After trading baskets the opening five minutes of the first quarter, the Blue and White rattled off a 7-0 run to take a 15-7 lead, highlighted by a three ball from Edwards. Immaculata would trim the Cavs' lead to 17-11 heading in to the second stanza.
The Cavs pushed their lead to eight points thanks to a jumper from Tutzauer with 7:39 left in the second, but an ensuing 13-2 run in favor of the hosts flipped the script as the Macs took a 26-23 lead heading into the intermission.
Cabrini quickly regained the lead coming out of the break as Matthews knocked down a three ball off an assist from Edwards and followed it up with a jumper from the shoulder for the 30-28 advantage. After trading baskets for the next four minutes, the Cavaliers used an 8-0 run to regain control, 43-33. Despite the momentum change, the Mighty Macs answered with a 10-6 spurt to climb back to within striking distance entering the fourth quarter.
The hosts would do their best to regain the lead, but clutch baskets from Tutzuer, Matthews and freshman
Dani Tyrell proved too much as the Cavs would hang on for the eventual 64-56 victory.
Cabrini's defense again caused problems for their opponent as they held Immaculata to 32.1% from the floor, including just 14.3 percent from beyond the arc, while forcing an impressive 27 turnovers.
Immaculata's Theresa Kearney led the hosts with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Brielle Rigo collected the double double with 12 points and 19 rebounds.
Following today's contest, the Cavs improve to 14-5 overall and 6-0 in Atlantic East Conference play. They will look to stay hot when they host the Neumann University Knights on Saturday, February 1st at 1pm.
