ASTON, PA – The Cabrini women's basketball team opened Atlantic East Conference play tonight with a resounding 76-49 victory at Neumann University.
The Cavaliers got significant contributions from the entire roster, as 15 players saw action with 12 marking the scoring column.
Junior
Kate Lannon led the Blue and White with a season high 23 points on 10-15 shooting in just 23 minutes of action. Classmate
Ashley Tutzauer hit 7-10 from the floor for 17 points.
Senior
Meghan Matthews earned game high honors with 10 rebounds to go with a career best eight assists. Tutzauer and classmate
Lexi Edwards gathered five boards each, one more than Lannon.
The Blue and White ran out to an early lead, shooting nearly. 600 from the field in the opening stanza. The Cavaliers bookended the first quarter with matching 9-0 runs, building a commanding 26-7 lead after 10 minutes of action.
Defensively, Cabrini never allowed Neumann to find its offensive rhythm in the first quarter, holding the home team to just 3-13 shooting with five turnovers.
The Cavaliers kept the Knights off balance through the second quarter, cruising to a 36-23 halftime lead.
Cabrini extended its cushion in the third quarter, as it opened the second half with a 9-2 spurt to extend its lead to 46-25 with six minutes left in the third.
The Blue and White showed no let-up in the final period, despite entering the final period with a 56-37 advantage. Cabrini outscored Neumann 20-12, holding the Knights to just .273 shooting with six fourth quarter turnovers.
Cabrini held the Knights to just .321 shooting and forced 19 turnovers, both among the Cavaliers' best defensive metrics of the season.
Meanwhile, on the offensive side of the hardwood, the Blue and White shot a season best .470, while committing just 13 turnovers, the team's second fewest of the campaign.
Chelsea Keebler led Neumann (4-9, 0-1 Atlantic East) with 14 points, draining 4-5 from three point range, and eight rebounds. Lauren Leicht added 11 points in the loss.
The Cavaliers (9-4, 1-0 Atlantic East) will return to Nerney Field House on Saturday, when they host the league's preseason favorite Marymount (11-3, 1-0 Atlantic East). Tip is set for 1pm.
