RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's basketball team inched its way closer to securing a postseason berth with tonight's 94-84 victory over Marywood at Nerney Field House.
Senior
Keith Blassingale entered the Cavaliers' record book in the win, as the senior paired 21 points and seven assists. With his three pointer with 5:49 to play, the senior became the 21st player to reach the 1,000 career point plateau wearing the Blue and White.
Sophomore
Voshon Mack earned game high honors with 25 points and eight rebounds, while junior
Justin Gans added 12 points.
The Cavaliers got off to a great start, scoring the game's first six points. Despite leading through the entire first half, Cabrini could not pull away, as the Blue and White cushion swung between 1-7 points, for much of the stanza.
A Gans fast break lay-up pushed the lead to 39-30 with just over our minutes left in the first half. A late 8-0 Marywood spurt pulled the visitors to within 43-42 with 62 seconds left in the first half, but sophomore
Ryan Byars found Mack for a bucket just before the halftime buzzer.
Much of the second half played out like the first, with Cabrini maintaining a slim lead. The Pacers clawed back midway through the half, using a 7-0 run to grab a 65-63 lead with 10:50 to play.
The lead was short-lived as Blassingale found junior
Billy Warren to even the score on the next possession. Twenty-five seconds later, a Warren free throw gave the Blue and White a lead it would not relinquish.
Holding a slim 74-71 lead 6:30 to play, the Cavaliers seemingly put the game away, scoring on four consecutive possessions to establish a 85-72 lead on junior
DJ Smith's jumper with just shy of five minutes to play.
The Pacers had an answer, scoring the game's next eight points to pull within 85-80 with just over two minutes to play.
Smith converted a triple on Cabrini's next possession, pushing the lead to an insurmountable eight points. The Blue and White then connected on 6-10 from the free throw line over the game's final two minutes to seal the win.
Junior Jack DeGroot scored 23 points to lead four Pacers (6-16, 1-8 Atlantic East) in double figures. Classmate Donovan Catchings added 15 points, seven rebounds and nine assists.
With tonight's win, the Cavaliers improved to 8-15 overall and 4-6 in the Atlantic East Conference, just one half game behind Immaculata for the number four seed with two games to play.
Cabrini has a few days to enjoy tonight's win before returning to action on Wednesday, when they travel south to face league leader Wesley (14-8, 8-1 Atlantic East). Tip is slated for 8pm in Dover, DE.
